So, decided a diesel was in future. Might as well do it now, while the gasser was worth more if I'm going to do it eventually anyhow.

Picked up a '16 2500 LT with the dmax. Love the truck. Empty I'm at 21mpg mixed driving, and the ride is even better than the 14 was. Really like it. Now the bad. About 40 miles into it, I parked, shut down and ran an errand. Came back out, start up, put it in reverse, I've got all indications I'm in reverse, but engine just revs. Back in drive pull forward try reverse again, it's all good. It does this three different times today. The last time, I revved it more and it jammed into gear and jumped back somewhat violently. Seems to only happen if it sits a few mins or more. Needless to say, it's day one, I'm irritated and in a loaner now. Very happy I was fortunate enough to be able to have the truck, but frustrated it had a problem right off. Also, I'm sure this will be a "could not duplicate" type thing.

Any dmax/Allison owners here ever experience anything similar? Trans fluid was full, and zero codes.
Could be fluid draining leaking past the converter check valve, which would take a little time to fill the converter back up. not sure how the Allison works, but just a thought

The Allison is an adaptive transmission, as in it learns how to shift the more you drive it. I know you aren't tuned, but in the ones that are, when we change tunes we should clear all the learned data in the TCM so that it re-learns how to shift appropriately for the new power level. I know that when I do a trans relearn, it will do exactly what yours did going into reverse. It will also shift hard and funny in drive. This is very short lived, as the transmission starts to learn quickly. Read the below article for more info on how to do a relearn with the Allison.

Allison 1000 transmission re-learn

If dealer cleared the TCM, they should have done the relearn procedure, but don't count on it. Won't hurt anything to do it yourself again. The Allison is a very smart transmission, but also very sensitive to electrical inputs. Do the relearn procedure and drive it. It will get smoother the more it learns about your driving habits.

Note: I'm not saying that there might not be something wrong with your truck. That's the reason vehicles come with warranties, things sometimes go wrong on the assembly line. Dealer cleared the TCM, drive it for a while and see what happens.

Great info. I've had other vehicles with this, but none so obvious as this one. Judging by how it drove yesterday as I left the dealer, it was back at square one learning. You can really tell a difference from the beginning of adaptive learning process. I noticed the same from when I left the dealer on day 1 up to the point I dropped it off. Haven't had any reverse issues either.

Had to take my trailer in for warranty work today. About. 50 miles towing, averaged a little over 10mpg at 65 with headwinds and heavy rain. Very impressed. Just as I'd read all over, set the cruise and exhaust brake and let it go. It was awesome. It wasn't even trying.

Wow! So if I get a new trailer that weights say 3-4k more, will the transmission re-learn over time or do I need to do a re-learn? It also looks like there are 2 profiles? One for normal and one for when the tow/haul button is on?

There are LOTS of different shift profiles. The Allison is very smart, and a very well designed transmission. That's what happens when GM (and Dodge with the Aisin) get a medium duty and heavy duty transmission company to build a light duty transmission. You get engineers that actually know what they are doing, lol.

Anyway, with changing trailers do not need to do a relearn. The dangerous thing is when you dramatically increase power levels without the relearn. My truck is 360ish hp stock. If I load a 550 hp tune right before running down the drag strip, it will slip the transmission in a heartbeat. As long as you are not tuning the truck, you shouldn't ever have to do a relearn unless something is worked on, then the dealer should do the relearn but don't count on it. It is important to occasionally do some 3/4 and full throttle runs, just so the transmission "remembers" how much power is actually on tap if needed. If you are towing with it, no worries it gets worked hard enough while pulling the trailer.

Final report on this. Nearly 500 miles on the odometer and no more reverse issues. Truck is great. Must've been a learning thing as noted above.

I'm thinking diesel is like high speed internet. You can't go back to dial up after this. Really liking the engine.

I've had mine 8 months. So far 3 trips pulling 10000 lb 5er. Leaving shortly on 3000 mile trip to Virginia Beach. Can't say enough good about my 2500 All Terrain.

Derailing my own thread a little. This is a little thing so didn't want to start a whole new thread. Found this plug behind rear bumper under the bed. Any idea what it's for? I don't have the parking sensors. For those maybe?

Love the truck btw. It pains me that I'm out of town for a month training for work and can't enjoy it.

Had a weird experience with Mt Dmax while traveling back to Oklahoma. The turbo failed with only 10,000 miles on it. Dealer in Tennessee replaced it and said they had never seen one fail at such low miles. Truck did great thru Tennessee and Virginia mountains. Averaged 13.2 mph for the 3700 miles. Coming over the Appalachianso, got caught behind 18 wheeler and got slowed down to 45 on incline. Pulled out, ran 2300 to 2400 and climbed right back to 65 with no trouble. Love my Dmax.

New dmax owner, but a bad start

I think a turbo failure is pretty rare per a thread I'd read on another forum of a failure on a 2016. These are complex machines, so stuff is bound to come up.

I've really enjoyed my truck so far. This past weekend we traveled up to Chickasaw National Park from DFW. Even with strong headwinds, and the cruise set at 68, it just pulled quietly in 6th for all but a short bit as we crested the Arbuckles. It dropped to 5th there.

Doesn't matter what brand turbo can fail, if you look at failure rate it is pretty low overall.

Just wanted to comment on the plug you had snapped a picture of. I could very well be wrong, but that just might be the plug for the LED bed lighting option, if you don't already have it.

EDIT: My bad for not looking at the post dates. You probably already figured out what the plug was for, since it was two months ago. Sorry about that.

Actually I hadn't figured that out. Thanks.

I do have one complaint on this truck. The paint. Less than 2K miles on the truck multiple dings down to bare metal. Other cars/trucks I've had can take a rock or door ding here and there and not go all the way through the surface.

I just bought a 2016 2500 Duramax/Allison on Saturday and mine came with the 4.10 rear end. I have the 4x4 z71 and LTZ package.

Id like to see a pic of your RPO codes in your glove box.
I've never, ever seen any available option for the duramax other than 3.73, unless it was in a Kodiak or topkick truck.

Indeed it does. Someone must've given me the wrong sticker because those Duramax badges and that noise from the engine is pretty diesel-y.
