New Expedition Towing

Anyone towing >7500lbs with a new expedition? What’s your payload and how’s the experience? Contemplating next TV for my 7600lb(loaded) bunkhouse vs a truck.

What's the loaded tongue weight of your trailer?

I would get the truck and make sure it has the payload for you, the passengers, the hitch, the tongue and stuff you want to take along. This isn't a tow rating issue, it's a payload issue. (although at 7600#, you will wish you had a pickup as you are crowding the tow limits on the Expedition). You are looking at a 3/4-ton crew cab; a 1/2-ton doesn't have the payload.

He's looking at a tongue weight between 912# (12%) and 1140# (15%) of his loaded weight (7600#). With him, the famdamily, hitch, tongue and stuff people like to carry camping, he is at or well above his payload rating.

Does your Expedition have the heavy-duty trailer tow package? If not, not only will you run out of payload, but you'll find that your tow capacity will be reduced to the point that you'll also most likely be exceeding your Gross Combination Weight Rating (combined weight of your Expedition and trailer). Not to mention possibly over-grossing the max hitch weight of your Expedition.

Good point but even with the HD trailering package it is probably still not doable. With the aforementioned tongue weights, the receiver assembly that is usually included on the SUV is at its tongue-weight design limits (10,000# max tow weight; 1000# max tongue weight).

Kind of low payload and wheelbase on the Expedition.

A trailer that weight is usually long. Aggravates issues in wind and passing vehicles.

A 250 crew cab short wheelbase would be more comfortable driving. My wife drives one everyday. Some issues with long trailers with 150’s. Need fancy anti sway system often.

Yeah, 150's & 1500's are too light for big, bunkhouse trailers. It really annoys me when I see 1/2-ton pickup trucks rated at 11,400# (or higher) tow capacity with a +/- 1500# payload. You need a 250 or 2500 HD pickup to tow that trailer. You will be glad you did.

I just reviewed the 2019 Expedition tow ratings and configurations. In a word - "No way, José!". Unless you have a death wish, that is. Get the F-250 Heavy Duty.

988lbs. We only carry passengers and road snacks in the cab of our current truck, nothing in the bed. Current payload on my truck is 1408lbs and we have 80-100 lbs left depending on trailer loading and over 200 lbs per axle left but only 200 lbs left of gvwr but 1800lbs left on gcwr. The new expedition is rated for 9200lbs, which I know means nothing, but has a 1900lb payload +/- depending on trim level and a longer wheelbase than my ram 1500.

Son has new Expedition with eco boost pulling a Mini Lite 2306, UVW 4337 lbs. If he keeps it under 2000 RPM he can get 10 MPG U.S. If not, he has trouble passing a gas station.
Power is not a problem.

Well I think the new 2019 model Expeditions are rated to tow about 9,500 pounds or so, so your trailer should not be much of a problem. You of course would have to ensure that your expedition has the max tow requirements. But from all that I have seen the expedition is rated number 1 in the large SUV market segment, so would be an outstanding option. You will have to keep an eye on the cargo capacity to ensure that you do not go over that when packing. The large SUV's can also be equipped with a weight distribution type of hitch with sway control, so make sure you purchase a good quality hitch arrangement for the new unit.

The 9200 lb tow capacity is only for those vehicles that have the heavy-duty trailer tow package. Do you know for certain that you have this package?
