New Rockwood Owner

Hello Everyone,

We are going to pick up our "new-to-us" TT on Monday, a 2013 2306. I've never pulled anything over 3000lbs before so this will be an experience, I'm sure.

One question I have for you guys is this:
The camper comes with a 1000/10000 equalizer. Is there any problem with having an equalizer that is "too big" for the TT/TV?

The current owner of the TT pulls it with a 2010 Tacoma CC, not much unlike my Frontier. I'm hoping that his setup will be similar enough for me to pull it home OK. It's about an hour's drive - 65 miles or so - from home.

Details of TT and TV are in signature. Please lend some insight to ease my worries!

We have a Rockwood 2306 but tow with a Cadillac Escalade so can't help you much with that aspect of it. If you have any questions about the camper let me know and I can help with that.

Thanks for the reply, Evereddie.

Do you have a WDH setup with yours?

Yes, I have the Pro Series with friction sway bar. I don't know the specifics but will see if I can get numbers off of it. Works great for our setup.

You picked a very nice trailer, indeed. Your trailer (3630 lbs dry weight, 4718 lbs GVWR) looks like it is at the upper end of your vehicle's maximum towing capacity (5000 lbs) if you don't fill it up with a whole lot of stuff. If you carry your fresh water and keep your load to a minimum, you should be OK.

As for your load equalizing hitch, the 1000/10000 rating is a good one because of its versatility. If you decide to upgrade your vehicle and trailer, the hitch will work on the combo up to 10,000 GVWR on the trailer. A friction sway bar really helps keep things running straight and smooth.

Let us know how the run home with your new trailer turns out!

Thanks for the reply! I appreciate the insight on the hitch. I know I am closing in on the capabilities of my Frontier (actually rated for 6100lbs). I'm more concerned about my payload rating; only 1100lbs. I figured we would give it a shot and if it seems squirrelly, that might help me convince my wife to get on board for an upgrade.

I will definitely let you guys know how it goes coming home. I am actually going to be picking it up tomorrow instead of Monday. Will be traveling in the foothills of NE Georgia, so should be a good trial run for the Frontier. Trailer will be empty, however.

Truck pulled good. Don't think I have any concerns with it at this point. Maybe a trans temp gauge would be nice. Otherwise, WDH transfer from his Tacoma to the Frontier was almost identical. Once I get everything loaded in it, may need to do some adjusting.

I put a set of Timbrens on my old Fronty. It made a world of difference in the towing.

The rear-end did get a little bouncy on some dips in the road. Probably a good idea!

I've considered trading up to a Titan this fall right before the redesign hits the lots. May have some good discounts! How do you like yours? I would definitely stick w/the Pro4x.

They are coming out with a Cummins powered Titan in the near future. It's supposed to be a beast. Kinda ugly in my book but....

I'm very pleased with my Titan. It has been a great truck, and does everything I need. Just be sure and get the towing package, and you are good to go up to 9200 lbs.

I agree. I'm not very fond of the look, but hoping it might grow on me as I see them out and about. I'm anxious to see some real world reports on MPG as well. I wish I could get the current body with the new Cummins, I would buy that all day long!!

Thanks for the input on the Titan you have. I drove a '15 Pro4x a few weeks ago and loved it, but oddly enough they weren't willing to budge much on the price. $45k

The equalizer rated higher than the trailer weight is a good thing, not a bad thing. Equalizer hitches have sway control as part of the design. No need for friction sway bar(s). I use a 14000 lb rated equalizer to tow my 9000 lb Rockwood. Works great!

Nice trailer. Looked at them too. The Rockwood and Flagstaff make the same floor plans just a different model number (mine is the 2304S I think). It is 5200 lbs. loaded.

A transmission cooler is a good idea for your truck if you don't have one. It wasn't in the Suburban even with HD trailer package.

The bouncy ride may be partly due to tires. My old P (passenger) rated tires were bouncy. Inflating them to near max per the sidewall on the tire helped. The solution I went to this year was to put LT tires on and what an improvement.

Lots of previous posts talk about WDH setup if you do a search. Your vehicle manual should have a towing section too, or the manufacturers website will.
