New to 5W and clueless
DH and I are looking at buying a Silverback 37bh AND a 2014 Ram 3500 Mega Cab with a standard bed. DH has researched but we still have no idea what brand/type/etc of trailer hitch to buy and if this is something we should have the truck dealer to install, the rv dealer to install, or someone else? Obviously we want the correct hitch and best installation for safety purposes but the prices range from a few hundred to a couple thousand and we don't really understand the cost/benefit there. Help!
The SBH weighs about 12,700 dry if that's important here.

I have a Reese Pro 15K slider. Can be purchased without the slider. Not expensive, not fancy. I'm pulling 12,000# with a 2,000# pin. It works great.

If your dealing with a dealer, try to find out what pin box is on that unit, and part number.....then while look'n for a hitch, you'll know if it's compatible.....

A whole lot also depends on how much you want or can pay and what type camping you do....... how much travel few miles or thousands of miles. I have had Reese hitches and bought all of them used. Usually any dealer that sells hitches (trailer or RV dealer) can install the hitches.

Just get a new rail kit is suggested by Reese and my engineer friend. Those bolts are suggested to NOT be re-used.

Also, the height of hitch matters.......trailer needs to sit level when ready to go......so one might need to raise or lower pin box (bolts into place). Is also recommended to have 6" clearance between bed rails and trailer (in and out of driveways).....

That fiver you are looking at does have a nose cone designed for a standard bed so that is a benefit and will work with the 6.4ft bed. So, in that case you can do a standard or a slider.
I like the B&W hitchs. If you have another trailer that requires a gooseneck and you already have a gooseneck hitch in the Dodge, then put on a Reese Goosebox on the fiver and be done.

I am a firm believer in the American made quality of the B&W products! Wouldn't consider another brand that wasn't made in the US (only B&W and Pull rite)

Ok, I have a 2008; Ram Mega Cab which has the standard box for that model year 6"-5" but this is one inch longer than your box; which is 6'-4". I have a Reese sliding hitch for my truck and I pull a Cedar Creek 34RL with the Trailair pin box on the trailer. I use the maneuver position on the slider hitch every time I put the trailer in my driveway and in tight campgrounds otherwise it is in the tow position.
I would not pull any 5er without some type of sliding hitch with a short box truck. I have always maintained that there are two types of people who pull a 5er with a short box truck without a slider hitch. Those that have hit the Cab and those that will hit the cab in the future. Which one will you be?
B&W Campion hitch will fit the Ram pick-up bed if this has the trailer package installed. You can also purchase B&W slider hitch that should work for your truck. Find a B&W hitch dealer that you can discuss your hitch needs with.

I assume your truck purchase is going to be a 3500? Otherwise your going to be overloaded before you even start.
By standard bed your referring to a 6.5 foot short bed? Get any of the slider hitches. They all work pretty much the same. Cost is the biggest difference

There is another choice for SWB.... look at the Reese Sidewinder. We have used it on the last 2 rigs. We much prefer this setup over a slider. Cheaper and you never have to get out of the truck to lock/unlock. Also you can use a regular hitch as compared to a slider which takes up the whole bed of your truck.
Several of our friends have sliders and they seem to work great when everything is nice and level. But when you really need them in less than optimal situations they seem to bind or won't lock/unlock.
Ok... sorry if I stepped on all the sliders toes... bring it on

Some slider hitches are automatic, some aren't....auto, in my opinion, is the only way to fly....

Sidewinder also very good, as it pivots at the trailer, not the pin giving an additional 22" of trailer to cab clearance

You didn't mention if the truck has the underbed factory mount. That's what I have with the Reese "picture frame" adapter and the Pullrite Superglide hitch. You may or may not need a slider, I don't want to get into that debate. If you decide that you would be more comfortable with a slider then I highly recommend this one. I'd say the biggest downside is that you have to be within 15 degrees of straight ahead to hook or unhook. Isn't the end of the world but I have had times where I've whipped my trailer into a perfect spot but had to reposition because the hitch wouldn't let go. I've found Pullrite's customer service to be outstanding.

If you go with a Full-time, you need to know which pin box you have, as you need the correct capture plate
