New to TT and a NEWBIE

Ok, I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota quad cab, 4.8l V-8, 131" wheel base. It has a trans. cooler on it and I think has a tow package(wired under dash for brake, and receiver hitch). On the door it list 6010lbs.

So if I use an 80% rule. . . . 6010 lbs. x 80% = 4808lbs.


We are looking at a V-Lite 26WRB Which list dry weight of 4766. After I add extras and our supplies, I think it is going to weight out at 5200lbs. That makes it around 88% of my towing capacity.

I know I don't want to tow 6000lbs.,(had a salesman tell me I could). Any suggestions from other V-Lite owners or Dodge Dakota owners?

Also, they are adding a WD hitch to the trailer.

Any particular brand I should stay away from?

Or better brands to opt for?

Don't believe everything you read, and how many times must the formula be posted? Weigh the truck with wife, kids, dog, bicycles, whatever you will have in it while traveling. Take the GCVWR of the truck, subtract the loaded weight you just weighed, and this is what you have left for a max trailer weight. Take the GVW and subtract the loaded weight you just got, and this is maximum tongue weight. Now go find a camper you will be happy towing, and it won't be near 6000 pounds, maybe more like 4500. Can you tow 6000, probably, but not comfortably, and if you're not towing comfortable, is this the way to start a vacation? Also don't forget to check the wheel base chart posted on here. Good luck.

Your numbers might line up, but in my opinion, your tt is too heavy and too long for the Dakota... that's my 2 cents

If you can travel with only 500 lbs of extras, please call my wife and tell her how to do it. Seriously though, if you looked closely at actual weight, you will find that you are too heavy for anything but flat close to home hauling.
