I know we have a trailer but was looking for a flatbed truck that would be able to carry this and tow the trailer. Kind of an old smart car gets 30 mpg and can be fixed with a screw driver and a crescent wrench. No fancy electronics and almost 50 yrs old and still going strong. We've actually had this for 8 yrs but for the last 5 she has sat in our garage because I was working too much to put any time into it. Started it for the 1st time in 5 yrs the other day cranked it over 5 times and once running idled right, no smoke. She's now down to the mechanic, I don't have a lift, to get a new clutch and a going over to find any problems that may have come from sitting. Once that's done she gets a new paint job.

Sweet! You don't see them like you use too. I have what use to be a daily driver and drag car on the weekends. Still have it but haven't driven it in 17 years. My son should enjoy it in 7 years. First is at the track and second is during the restoration. Still have to finish some stuff.

This one is a 68 has I think 60,000 miles and when I went to get it I borrowed a trailer to haul it home. The trailer had no lights and bald tires, when I arranged to do this I didn't know the shape of the trailer I borrowed. Took every back road I could for the 40 mile trip, on the way home I hit the most nasty rain, hail and lightning, turned 4 ways on the bug so it was visible. My wife later named the car Stormy because of this. Oh and when I got the car on the trailer I had to crawl out the window , door couldn't open, trailer fender was in way. I'm 6'2 205 not a little person.

You can pick up a VW type I tow bar for cheap. Attend a VW Show and save on shipping. With the tow bar and some magnetic tow lights you can flat tow it anywhere you want. I always had one just in case.
Just make sure it's in neutral.
My Mechanic told me not to tow, long distance, unless on a trailer. The car could slip in gear if you hit a bump right and while your towing like that the tranny is spinning and adds wear. He claimed it was better to drive or put on a trailer.

Slip into gear...... that's funny. I have friends that toured the eastern US flat towing from event to another never had an issue. Plus the design of the transaxle allows gear oil to be distributed throughout.
Talk to a VW mechanic, clearly he is not.
Got our old girl back, new clutch, clutch cable throwout bearing, transmission seals,wheel seals and rear brakes. Parts and labor just over $500. Seems to go good now. While engine was out the mechanic let me in his shop so I could take engine sheet metal off . Took it all home clean it up and repaint it, now even engine looks good.

Had 2 bugs, 66 and 68 in my earlier days. Got through college in the 66. Remember putting a stinger exhaust on it, spacers with bolt pattern for chevy chrome reverse rims with baby moons, and all little doo-dads inside.
Even installed an old Paxton supercharger. Never could get it to work right. Everytime you would floor it, it would throw the belt. No matter how tight it was, that belt was history.
Remember having someone heavy sitting in the rear seat and having the battery short out everytime you hit a bump?
Oh, the good old days.
