I have a 2013 Silverado 1500 5.3/ 6 speed with 3.42 gears. I'm pulling a Lacrosse 301rls thats 7000 lbs / tongue of 800lb. It pulled good but I didn't take any mts with it yet. It did every thing I needed to do.
But now they are both up for sale. DW got her way for a Wildcat 327ck and now I need a bigger truck.

I had a 2008 Silverado 1500 5.3 liter 3.42 rear pulling a 29' TT dry weight 5500. Loaded up I have no idea. It struggled big time on hills and trans temp was always around 230 or more. When not towing trans still ran around 200. I think the trans cooler (stock) was to small. Imo, I'd upgrade to something with more power. Better to have to much than not enough.

I up graded from a 2008 Serria 5.3/ 3.73 gear / 4 speed and the highest tranny temp I had was 208 pulling up a steep hill at 95 degrees outside. Normal tranny temp pulling was 180-190.

I don't know, maybe the 2008 needed some bugs worked out. I've read about other owners having high temp readings. I went to one campground (Eagles Peak in PA) that is on top of a small steep mountain. The grade going up will work any engine. I knew it wasn't good when I got to the top and smelled the trans when I got out. I bought the truck used with 11000 on it but unfortunately it was loaded with stuff I didn't need. It did fine for what we needed but I wanted more after two years. I told the wife I was thinking about just getting a simple more powerful truck. She wasn't on board till I said we can look at 5th wheels if I had something with more power. The rest is history. Instead of all those bells and whistles the 2008 had now I have a basic work truck with a full blown heavy duty towing package/trans/6.0 liter/suspension/4.10 rear/manual roll up windows/ manual transfer case and no carpet. Nice and simple. I'd be lucking if the trans gets above 165 now. I feel better with the extra head room with the temp. Plus the manual shift button on the column shifter is nice.

My only issue was the Passenger rated tires.

I put LT's on my 2008 GMC only to trade it in a month later. It did make a differance.

Thanks to all, great information. Went ahead and pulled the trigger on a new silverado with the max two package and 3.73 gears. Was really difficult to find. Chevy apparently hasn't put too many out there yet. Haven't pulled my camper yet. Still less than 500. Miles on it. Maybe in a couple of weeks. Looks like spring "might" be coming then,
