New TV Advice
Looking at 2500 or 3500 Ram Mega Cab 4x4. Don’t need the capacity of a 1 ton as our trailer will be around for about 6 years yet but deals in town have the 2 priced only about $1200 apart so may go with the 1 ton just because. Trailer is a 264bhs GVWR of 8600lbs. Loaded scale weights have been consistently between 7300-7600lbs for 4 years (we have a free hwy scale just outside of town) depending on how much water i have in it. 1500 5.7 Ram is getting long in the tooth and want a little more power and better than 7mpg with aftermarket headers, 6.5 prior all hand calcd.
Now the tough question, 6.7 Cummins diesel or 6.4L Hemi gas. Deciding factor will be mileage and maintenance cost, so need mileage numbers for similar setups gas and diesel and cost of oil changes. TIA.

Guessing its a box and you like to tow fast. As if you had the 8 speed 3.92 it should scoot that right along. Go for the Cummins not that the 6.4 isn't a good motor it is but starting out with say 1,500 pounds more truck its not going to get any better mileage than the 5.7.

Best motor & gearing all 5 Mfgs within specs IE safe & stable normally to 8k but passengers & bedload reduce this. RAM 1500 ED max tow 9,200, max axle ratings 3,900, max 09-18 CVWR 15,950, axle weights me & gear 3,240 steer 2,560 drive

Only have the 6 speed. Buddy has the same truck, very similar trailer with the 8 speed and 3.92s and gets the same mileage. We are towing in The foothills and Rocky Mountains though so that probably has something to do with it.

Yeah Cummins or don't bother. Granted you can buy a lot fuel for the difference in price but that is only part of this equation for you. "getting long in the tooth and wanting more power"

My RAM with the 6.7 get consistently 21 to 22 mpg empty and 11 mpg pulling our TT that weigh 11k ready to camp.
Oil change every 15k miles if you do it yourself, 50 bucks, Rotella 15w40, three gallons and a Mopar filter.
Fuel filters are around a hundred, cheaper if you shop around, Mopar also.

i used to get 20mpg unloaded with my truck when it had stock tires on it.
my truck, with 35" tires, towing my camper gets about 12mpg.
3 gallons of rotella is $45, oil filter is $13, both fuel filters are $90 on amazon.
get the cummins!
