I prefer to pay the little extra (about $35.00) for the correct tag and piece of mind. The fine is a lot more plus the aggravation of correcting it if pulled over.

But, To each their own!

Transferred my plates from an F150 with a 7700 rating to my F350. Two months later stopped at DMV to add a little ~~ cost $30. Now at 10K even though could go much more.

In my state I'm tag for the GCW and mine is 12,000 (12M) so if I tow trailer and my combine rating is over 12,000 I can be fined. But in my state if you have a RV with plumbed stool you doesn't count against you GVW ratings or other wise it is exempt. Got to love goverment..

We live in IL and it's our understanding that it goes by axle weight. When hooked up to a trailer, it's the weight of the combined tow vehicle's axles hitch/pin is included not the total weight of the trailer since it has has its own axles. So if your GAWR on the tv combined is over 8K lbs. then you have to move up to D plates or higher. That info is on he white sticker on the driver door or door frame. Some IL State Police cars have portable scales that the troopers can use to weigh trucks/RVs.

An acquaintance didn't want to pay for a plate for his 1 ton farm truck so he put a $5 utility trailer tag on it. He mounted it under the bed, bent it in half, and smeared it with mud. In 5 years he was stopped in license checks three time and neither patrolman crawled underneath to check it.

The fine would only have been $25 so after the first year he was ahead.

After researching IL.gov and SOS websites I'm happy with my D plate choice.

Truck is great, best truck I've ever owned and I've owned and drove a lot of trucks. 19.8 mpg on the tank right now, and that's not all interstate. It seems to get the same mileage at 75 as it does at 55.

I hope I don't find out the towing mileage until the end of November, because if I found it out sooner that would mean there was no work and I had to haul my trailer home. In December we're pulling it to florida.
