Traded my 2015 silverado 1500 double cab for a 2015 2500HD LTZ 4x4 Z71 crew cab 6.6 duramax with 25,000 miles on it. Got all my goodies back, heated and cooled seats and all the good stuff, plus I can tow without fear now. Navigation, front and rear proximity sensors, factory folding tonneau, leather, engine brake, It's pretty much loaded.
I got the same mileage on my trip back to St. Louis for work Sunday in it as I'd been getting in the 1500, around 20 mpg.
It's my 3rd 2015 chevrolet, which is ridiculous, but my life parameters changed quickly.
Colorado, got bigger trailer so it's too small.
1500, bought Windjammer to pull to Florida so it was on the borderline.
Now the duramax.
Wife likes the 3001W so much she wants to use it all the time and drag it back and forth from florida instead of leaving it there, and sell the sunset trail. I'm on board with this plan, at least until I can afford a fifth wheel.
I'm very happy with this vehicle so far.
So watch out you 1/2 ton owners, if I have time I'll be on every thread.

The sales manager, my friend the salesman, and I wrestled with plate classifications for 15 minutes. Whether to transfer my IL B or buy D.
I ended up buying D/ I have to pay for them quarterly, pain in the hinie, plus they're high.
But I didn't want to be caused grief by an over eager state trooper in my state or another one.
Illinois sucks.

DMV told me to transfer my 10K plates from the F250 and make no changes. The clerk said the truck is not being used commercially. Besides you would have to be stopped for an infraction for anything noticed while towing the 5er. She said local and county would not care and unlikely a trooper would either. She also said the fine/costs are low ~~ and has not heard of any written up unless commercial.

Why did you go with a D plate? Is your truck over 8000 LBS?
I have a 3/4 ton Ram Mega Cab that I tow a 34RL Cedar Creek with. The truck has a IL B plate and I checked with the secretary of state police on whether or not I needed a D plate or a B plate for the truck when I towed that trailer. Their answer was as long as the truck weights less than 8,000 LBS than a B plate is all I needed, even when towing an RV trailer.

Apparently it was explained to me incorrectly. Too late now.

I wonder how fast he was going since he was towing a trailer he should've been doing 55 or 60 mph but I bet he was doing 70 or better. The faster you go the more chance you have a having an accident, if something happens.

In Illinois, when you are registering your vehicle, you are paying for weight. The B plate vs D plate has nothing to do with commercial/non-commercial or what your truck weighs empty. What you are doing when you register and choose a plate is, you are paying a tax based on how much weight you will be at any given time.
You can register your truck with a B plate. As long as you never weigh over 8,000 lbs (limit for B plate) AT ANY TIME YOU HAVE THAT PLATE, you are totally legal. If you ever weigh over 8,000 lbs while driving on the road with that B plate, you are overweight for your registration.
For those of us that want to weigh more than 8,000 lbs and be legal, the D plate is it. I think the D plate is good up to 12,000 lbs.
For towing, it gets more complicated as the tow vehicle and trailer are considered one entity... and the registered weights are combined to determine if you are overweight.

Hi,
I went to D plates when some of the towns on my regular driving/towing routes realized there was money to be made ticketing B plates towing stuff that put them over that stupid arbitrary 8000# limit.
So now it is not just more costly plates, but twice a year inspections. Just another reason to wish I didn't have so many family and social ties in this state...
FWIW.

An F350 with a 5er hitch only can be over the 8000 limit. NC has a personal property tax. The plates for my 2016 F350 are $138. Add the tax and it is over $300. The tax is based on value so as the vehicle ages it goes down.

It always amazes me how folks who don't have a clue what happened, use an accident like this to further their pet peeve. Could be this unfortunate fellow was completely innocent of any type of negligence. Have a nice day!!!

Roger that!
We should have a contest for members to GUESS how fast this particular rig was traveling. We could give a prize for the correct guess IF we could validate the correct answer.

In Illinois, if you are towing, the tow vehicle and the trailer have to combine their weight. Then, the combined registered weight of the tow vehicle and trailer are used. Technically, your tow vehicle could be over because of pin weight... but not really be over because of the combination. In a towing situation, the police can't separate things.

Typically weight based plates are based on a vehicle's gvwr. For example my chevy 3500 duramax weighs a little over 8280 lbs empty. It has an 11600 lb gvwr. I have a 15,000 lb weighted tag. My old f250 psd weighed 8300 lbs empty and had a 10000 lb gvwr. I had 10,000 lb weighted tags on it. (No weighted tag in between the two).
IMHO reading what the requirements are for IL B vs D are, you chose correctly as your gvwr is probably 10,000 lbs.

Actually, NC does have a 12,000 lb rating.....if you are interested!
