Noisy brakes

So my son says "Hey dad, my brakes are noisy."
I say " How long has this been going on?"
He says "A while."
Here is what I found:

That would have been beyond noisy. Holy crap indeed.

He finally decided to tell me about it because "it wasn't stopping so good". I did the "intact" side first and was surprised at how bad it was. When I took the other wheel off the large chunk but paper thin piece of rotor was firmly clamped between what was left of the pads while the rotor spun freely.
Auto shop should be a mandatory class in high school!

I'm surprised he didn't lose 1 of his hydraulic braking circuits, spewing fluid all over the place. We test brakes for leaks at full pad and rotor wear (MIN turned condition), but not at "missing rotor plate" condition!

You said "I did the "intact" side first....". I hope DS was right there with you, so you could smack the back of his head every few minutes.

I was indeed surprised the piston went that far out without popping out of the caliper. It must have been very close!
