My understanding is he's had it since new (2000/2001) Dodge Durango and I guess he just wanted to wake it up some. Hope he doesn't need to make a coast to coast trip....be spendy!

its been many years since I adj my gears in my 57 chevy, I did it by feel and grease and had no noise, it sounds like the set up was wrong . and why did you change from stock?

No drag racing for me. I'm using this as a TV fr my Forest River TT . The 4.56 livens it up a bit for towing. Cheaper than buying a new rig, I just broke it in at 103K miles.

They definitely do not have the pinion depth set properly. This has to be done first so the pinion teeth are contacting the ring gear teeth at the proper angle and pitch. This will cause the noise if not perfect. This job requires a knowledgeable Technician to get it right. Driving it will only cause a bad wear pattern to form on the gears. They may never be quiet if driven to much. In my 40 plus years as a Master Tech I only knew a few guys that set these up correctly.
I wish you luck.

Any local speed shop should be able to set the rear end up. Where about's are you located? It will liven it up a bit however your mileage will suck big time and expect not to go very fast.

I'm in Eugen Oregon. It does well pulling the TT keeps it right in the power band @ 55- 65. It holds od fine th straight flat at 60 so I'm good. Mileage sucks anyway while towing a wall back there.

Just got my rig back, shop replaced the rear ring and pinion. It is much quieter but still has noise at highway cruising speed. It of course goes away if i pull it out of gear, accelerate or let off the throttle.

Shop explained it away as "normal'"with a higher ratio gear set. Of course they did this the last set as well. Shop Manager did say the pattern didn't set right on the first set.

I have a feeling its just going to get louder as it did before. At this point it has about 100 miles that the shop put on the gear set. I may take it somewhere else to take a look.

He's obviously a scam artist.
This is funny to no end.
I've got 534 gears in a car I have and you cannot hear any gear noise what so ever!
Btw, I didn't notice but did they replace all the bearings in the rear end ? Those early 2000's Durango's had bad bearing issues.
