Glad you picked up on the "comical" part.

With all the stats and opinions, after two camping seasons here are the facts:
Towing 8500# I'm at 65 long before the end of the highway ramp. I never slow down on any hills and pick up speed on hills passing trucks on the highway. Even with the pin over the center bed I spin my tires on wet roads if I'm not careful on take off. I get 21 mpg highway and 9.5 to 10 towing. (sticker says 21 and 24 without lower gear rear end, max tow pkg) With the 36 gallon tank I have great range. 6 speed transmission, haul mode with auto downshift to aid braking, and manual shift if preferred, it's never run hot. The tow package includes a built in trailer brake control, auto anti sway braking control, hide away side box steps, expanding mirrors, 11,300# tow cap and enough payload for my 5th wheel. Not bad for a 1/2 ton F150. Just the facts
I love it!

Drive them both. I did and there is no comparison. I would have been very happy with the v8 but the boost is a beast.
Diesel feel at a gasser price works for me. I too love the rumble of a v8 but there is a lot of tech in the boost engine and it is obvious when towing. Longevity? Who knows but so far bulletproof for me.

Here is a dyno comparing a V8 5.0 F150 and an V6 ecoboost 3.5 same trucks same gear ratio same 4WD same day same dyno. Have a look at the torque curve and tell me there no replacement for displacement. Peak trq@2,900 rpms out of a gasser is simply awesome for towing

Great info... Thanks. However, I wonder what the comparisons will be when both have 150K miles on them. Pulling with a gasser and all that boost will be hard on the V-6. Maybe FoMoCo knows what they're doing... I'll stick with my 5.0 for now... unless I trade up to a heavier TT. At that point an oil burner is in order.

One more thing to consider. When I was evaluating what to pull 8500# with, how about cost. I saw a range from 35k for what I bought and 45k and more as alternative 3/4 ton V8's and diesels.
Now if I went to a 10,000# or more 5th wheel I'd be in a whole other tow vehicle class and would have to spend more than 45k.

Done! I'm sure it won't be more than one or two days before we get to start it all over again. (In fact, there's already another thread with legal advice and everything!) Barry
