If we go by the DIC does it matter full synthetic or a blend?

Thanks.Full or blend? Does it matter? Can't be a bigger fight than Diesel or gas. That's always fun.

I bought lifetime oil changes from Lithia Dodge in 2010 and get a fresh load of Rotella every 3500 miles (the dealership probably thought I would trade sooner!). I paid a little over $800.00 for the "Lifetime Change" and figured with normally $75.00 per change after 3 years I would be money ahead. I'm at 5 years and even though I would probably wait for 5K to roll around before a change if I were paying for each change, I change at 3500 k miles. On trips I have twice had synthetic instead of Rotella and I did extend the time between change to 7500K. When in doubt -Change it out. Clean oil NEVER hurt an engine!

Not to me...I use Schaeffers and Rotella blend. 2+12 qts been doing that for the last 2 diesels. The royal purple rep told me you could blend synthetic with conventional oils...just don't jump around. An old Mobil oil man told me you could change conventional oils all you wanted...just don't change from gulf based to Pennsylvania based crude...then he said most oil is gulf based now. I won't jump around. Pick one and stay with it. JMO

As I understand, the DIC will be based on the recommended oil by the manufacturer. So if they recommend petroleum, you will be way to the good with a blend or full synthetic. The DIC is supposed to take into account the heavy duty use it see when towing. With proper testing/analysis you can go 25k with full synthetic.

I'll put my 2 cents worth out there. Yes it matters, & Full Synthetic saved an engine for me, years ago, when it overheated.

Blended is definitely a step above petroleum, and full synthetic is a step up from blended.

I have used AmsOil full synthetic for years, and am sold on synthetic oils, greases etc. Always use synthetic grease for the wheel bearings, so much better with heat & water washout (boat trailers).

Let the comments roll in.

I have also used Amsoil and have a friend who is a dealer. Just be wary of the long oil change intervals claimed. We had a Duramax work truck and the turbo went out. GM said the failure was caused by failure to follow the maintenance schedule and Amsoil said it was defective turbo. Neither would admit fault and although under factory warranty, neither would pay for the repair.

Engine oil filter changed with every engine oil change. Fuel filters changed with every other engine oil servicing.

I did my first oil change on the F250 last week. I let the dealer have it because the price for them to do it was $5 more than me buying from Wal-Mart, using Motorcraft oil and filter. The next change will include the fuel filters - haven't done a cost analysis on me vs them yet.

Oil changed in diesel trucks

Each 10,000 mile. Just have dealer do it. My dealer does not require an appointment. So I just go at my convenience. Fuel filters 20,000 ---Ford F-350 2014.

mlangdn ... what a deal.....and you don't have to get rid of the used stuff....if they offer to change the fuel filters [ there are two and cost about 50-55 from amazon]....for a few more bucks you'd be getting yourself out of a messy job.....on your back under the truck getting fuel over yourself....why !!

Because you know that it is done right when you change the oil and all of the filters instead of a dealer! Youi can also see if the undercarriage has any issues or the engine has a slight oil leak.

Most quick lube racks at the dealers are not equipped to grease the items that require greasing on our trucks. Such as the front CV joint and any steering linkage components. The racks are set up for cars and the 1/2 ton light duty trucks that don't require greasing not the heavy duty trucks that we tow with.

Another issue at least with the Cummins is the dealers do not let the engine drain long enough to remove most of the used engine oil in them. Every time I had the dealer change my oil when I first bought the truck the engine was overfilled with oil.

Also dealer will not take an oil sample for you. My engine oil is sampled every 5,000 miles. Plus my oil changes are about 40 to 50 dollars cheaper than a dealer charges.

When I figured it up I saved $88- over what Kwik Kar charged and I know I actually got synthetic oil... It will be more savings when I do the fuel filters next time. That means I can stay out longer when I retire and go camping... Fourteen months from tomorrow... not that I'm counting or anything...

FWIW my Ram dealer only adds 11 qts of oil to my CTD. No overfilling. He also greases that goofy needle nose required u-joint on the front. Some dealers are better than others.

Rotella T6 5-40 severe service synthetic, 13 quarts. I change it when the computer tells me too, so far this has yielded me 7000-7500 miles. I have 13,600 on the truck now, we are going on a long trip a couple weeks and I will change my fuel filters for the first time before I go. I get all my Motorcraft stuff from here
Dieselfiltersonline.com your source for all your diesel trucks parts needs. I haven't found cheaper filters anywhere.
