Oil consumption
I lost about half a quart of oil while towing about 100 miles.
Normal?

No, but need more info for people to give you informed feedback......engine type, make and model of vehicle at least, how many miles on engine, etc etc

Absolutely not
Did it leak out or burn?

I didn't think so.
This is a 2011 tundra 5.7 liter with 58k miles.
No evidence of leaking. Also no smoke that I could tell.

Any sign of a blown head gasket or perhaps a cracked head?
Is the oil milky or is there oil in the radiator?
The oil had to go some place.
Is the exhaust tip oily or smell of burnt oil?
what do the spark plugs, how do they look?

Might be normal, but would check with dealer service dept. My dad had a tractor that would burn a gallon of oil a day when pulling hard but little to no loss on easy work.

Definitely not a good sign, I assume this is the first time you have noticed this, and what made you check the oil after 100 miles was there some issue that you noticed?

Toyota makes a good engine. I'd double check to see if this repeats and/or is accurate before I'd become concerned.
But, to answer your question, you should not be using oil. An engine that uses oil under load is generally "in trouble".
We did a 4,000 mile towing trip last spring and the oil never budged off of the full mark.

X6. Todays modern engines should not use any oil (emissions standards). If it does, then there are issues-a-brewin ie; worn rings, valve seals, PCV system plugged (if equipped), leaks etc.
It's also possible your last oil change didn't get topped off properly (if you didn't do it yourself). Top it off or get it changed with a good quality oil and monitor it closely loaded and unloaded.

I think it would be a good idea to check the filter and make sure it is the correct type, having the wrong filter will cause problems.

It's been fine with no trailer in tow and I had changed the oil about a month ago and been watching it. This was the first pull of the trailer with this truck. No overheating on anything, no frothy oil or coolant and no leaks and tailpipe looks normal.
I called the dealer and while they didn't say don't drive it, they want me to call back Monday when their shop foreman is in. I'll just top it off for the trip back Sunday and watch it closely. Yay for extended warranty if it comes to that.
