If the Tranny doesn't explode, we had a 1974 that had 3 tranny's put in free by GM. Turbo Hydromatic 400 if I remember rightly. Dad gave it up in 1980 a dn sold the travel trailer went to a camper van.

Old tow vehicle
2004 Z71 Siverado 1500., pulls my 6600 lbs Rockwood 2604 no problem with the 5.3 engine. I too would love to trade up but why would I when all is good with the old girl....... 145000 kim strong!

1995 four door 8' box Centaurus conversion F350 7.3 5 speed manual 4.10 gears dully limited slip rear end. 114,000 miles. Trailer is a 2015 Flagstaff 30wikss v-light diamond we picked her up in late march.

I'd love to upgrade to a Ram Cummings, but for now my 2010 Ram Hemi does the job easily with my 2008 Surveyor at around 8,000 pounds. I calculated the pay back on fuel savings and it would take over 20 years to even come close to making a big enough difference trading up. You can still dream though!

I have same TV with 110000 miles. The 5.9 diesel is just getting broke in. We tow a 14000 loaded sandstorm 29.5 without any problem. The only issue we have had is a new jake brake pump at about 80000.

Yes I know it's a million mile engine and I never feel like i'm driving a 9 year old truck with 150k on it because it still drives and runs great no rattles. I plan on keeping it a long time(nice not to have the truck payment) but you sure do start to want a new one when you see all the new trucks rolling into the campground. I think I would want a new one more for the interior comforts don't know if I would want to deal with all the new emission equipment on the diesels. I feel that mine is more reliable than the new ones( to many electronics and sensors to fail). I have no worries about hooking the trailer up and making a 12 hour trip.

I don't hear about too many transmission problems in Suburbans. My mom has driven one for her job for 30 years. The company she works for uses them as school buses to transport special education students. They have a whole fleet of them that have a ton of miles put on them every year and AFAIK, haven't had any major problems with transmissions.

V10 Excursion
DW and I just bought new 2016 FR FQLS toy hauler. We had to get a different TV because our old GMC Denali didn't have the tow capacity. DW didn't want a pickup or a diesel anything and she had to stay with a suv. We found a 2005 Ford Excursion with Triton V-10 and it really has the power and 10,000 lb. tow capacity. 133,000 miles on it and it was in very good condition. We got a super deal. I added some Airlift 5000 air springs to it to level it up when pulling the trailer. Excursion and trailer really look sweet together. Only problem is they don't like to pass a lot of gas stations without stopping. But hey DW doesn't either.

2004.5 Ram 2500 ST long bed, 2x4, Cummins 5.9, 3.73, almost 140k. Bought it from dealer in Virginia (Ford). One owner from Maryland and got a two year drive train warranty and free oil changes for life. 10k. With the exception of the Reese WD shank being 2" short, pulls like a beast. Anybody ever use a 2" riser ball or is it best to just find a shank with 2 extra holes?

Older Tow Vehicles ?
I was pulling with an 05 F250 with 6.0 PSD. Just got a "new" truck. It's an 06 F350 with 6.0 PSD 😄

The Excursion and the 7.3 I have always thought was a great combination for a TV. The 7.3 was the best diesel Ford had.

Love the Ex. We had a 2000 limited with 7.3 and sold it because wife wanted a newer vehicle. So we got an 04 excursion with 6.0 😄
Nothing can touch the excursions towing and seating capacity. What else can seat up to 8 people comfortably and tow 12k ?

Had an 01 1500 Silverado extended cab 150,000 mi. Moved up, into an 03 1500 HD Sierra with 90,000 showing, needed 4 real doors for the DD and dog. Nice having the 6.0/4l80 too.
