I almost went 2WD on my last truck. I never off road, camp only at improved sites, and live in Texas. Decided to bite the bullet and get the 4x for "just in case." A couple of months later we had a massive ice/snow storm and I used 4wd a LOT. We would have been stuck at the house for 4 or 5 days had I not had the 4wd. And, as others have mentioned, the vast majority of trucks are driven like mine and stay on the pavement for the most part. I'd be looking at trucks owned by "city folk", if it was me. Much less likely that it has seen hard off roading, but no guarantee.

I wouldn't fret about buying a used 4wd. Why, as previously mentioned most are rarely used much in 4wd. The drive units are relatively simple. If you drive a used truck in 4wd and it makes odd noises, walk away. I also think if a persons is going to beat his truck, there'll be obvious signs such as dents, messed up interior, debris in the under carriage, etc. If there is service records available, its likely the person didn't beat the truck.

These are just my opinions.
