Ordered a trucool 40k transmission cooler

Hitting 180 in 80 degree weather got me thinking about the future when it's over 100. I'm looking at the install and some say to install it upside down so it fills up and doesn't only use the bottom few inches for cooling. Is this right? Installing it upside down sounds like I will need to do some plumbing. Probably not tough just want to be prepared for it.

Thoughts or comments?

100 over ambient is normal. You are looking to fix a problem that may not exist. 200 or even 210 is not going to hurt your tranny. Modern fluids don't break down till 250 these days.

My 2016 Ford runs 200 degrees with no load or pulling 12,000 lbs up a hill. Outside temp has little influence.

Really? Outside temp has no influence? I'm reading just the opposite. If 108 degree doesn't influence tranny temp, then I may not have any issue in July and August but I think there are a lot of people that would disagree.

More reading for me!

My 2012 F-150 normal tranny temp is about 195 and the thermostat for the aux cooler opens around 195. My tranny cooler stays at o/s temp until 195, that's when the thermostat opens up and I can then feel the heat to the touch. You have to remember that as long as your truck radiator keeps the engine cool below 195 that aux cooler won't kick in. Make sure you use synthetic transmission fluid, it'll last longer at those temps.

Not sure if my 2012 Silverado has the bypass or not. I never see more than 160 without a trailer and I get some cooking when I'm the highway so I'm just guessing as I really don't know that they starting putting the bypass on the newer Silverado. I may just be talking out of my ***** though but doing as much reading as I can.

Thanks for the comments!

Little influence.

Factory tranny coolers are thermostatically controlled, allowing the temp come up soon... then keeps it there.

I'm not trying to derail the thread though. I see you are talking about an aftermarket cooler... so I'll step away.. [emoji846]

I appreciate the comments! Maybe I'll return it. Like I said, I'm learning and appreciate all the help I can get. I've always heard that outside temps on my model have an impact. 70-80 above ambient is what I've read. Maybe I'm reading the wrong stuff

Ok, confirmed that 80 -100 degrees over ambient in my truck so outside temp definitely plays a role in my tranny fluid temps.

I put an 8" electric fan in front of the factory Tranny cooler . When towing in stop and go traffic l just flip it on and it will drop the temp between 10 - 20 deg on a hot day.

That's probably the ticket right there

Which one did you get and how did you install? If I'm moving I'm good but stop and goes is what is going to get me in this hot state.

What type of truck do you have is the truck a diesel or gas engine? Does the truck have a tow package on the truck?

The reason I ask are that the parameters are different on different version of the same model of truck. A diesel engine truck with a tow package will have more improve cooling than a gas engine grocery getter of the same model.

With my truck I normally see between 160 and 180 F transmission temperature when towing my 34RL Cedar Creek in 90F ambient air temps. Even out west and in the mountains when the temps where close to 100F I never reached more than 190F. I am towing with a diesel engine truck with a tow package for this model.

It's a gasser 5.3 Silverado. HD Tow package installed. Not the NHT with the better rear end but all other towing goodies
