Out with the F150, in with the F250

Hated to do, but glad I did. The F150 5.0 was a great truck and did all I wanted it to do, but felt it was time to upgrade. The first test ride was all it took, I LOVE THIS THING !!

Nice set of wheels sir! You'll be amazed at how that truck will effortlessly pull a load up a grade. It will grunt along at 1600 rpm where that old 5.0 screamed and wheezed at 5000.

Nice truck. I found myself in the same situation. LOVED my F150 with the Ecoboost. Never had any problems with the motor. Never felt unsafe towing my trailer. Never felt under powered. Etc. But we will at some point want a larger trailer, and we figured it would be wise to upgrade the truck first, as to not be standing at the dealer with a new trailer and no way to tow it home, lol . So we now have a 2019 F250 Powerstroke. Our first tow will be this weekend. Looking forward to the comparison of how it feels, fuel mileage towing, etc. Never had a diesel before.

I'm in the same boat as semper above -- towing a 2018 2504S Mini Lite with a 6.7 PSD. I still can't believe that the 2509S won the bunkhouse Murphy bed floor plan war.

I really like the Sport blacked out look, particularly over time. Black grills and wheels just age a lot better (chromed plastic peels, pits, and such). But halogen headlights were a complete deal-killer for me. The Super Duty quad beam LEDs are simply amazing headlights.

The 3/4 ton diesels will be a bit payload limited, but it may be academic and it definitely doesn't matter a bit with the Mini Lites.

Don't know what the towing is like in Maryland. I lived in VA many years ago and the blue ridge mountains had a few grades in them. But, pulling up 5-8% grades at 7 - 11,000' is a breeze with the PSD. I have to be careful not to speed going up the Ike Gauntlet. 6th gear can pull most moderate grades, 5th gear gets me over the tough stuff at speed, and 4th gear is flat-out race-car mode ripping up hills.

I definitely don't need a PSD. I sure do love towing with it and love the relative future-proof state that I'm in.

If you're looking for three quick mods, here are some ideas:

1. Rear wheel well liners. Penda is the company that makes them for Ford and they can be ordered from Advanced Auto Parts, which usually has 20-25% coupons available. I got mine for about $90 delivered. Again, same exact as the Ford. These just finish the truck. You no longer see the body color paint in your wheel well. I was shocked at how much an improvement this made.
2. Grille driving lights. You can spend $700 for Rigid, $300 for ZRoadz, or $150 for Rough Country. I went with RC. They integrate wonderfully -- both the installation and the overall look. They are extremely bright ... probably ~25% more light than my hi-beams. Tie easily into an upfitter switch in your cab.
3. Rear backup lights. Here is where I went really cheap -- got some flood light pattern from amazon for $20. Easy integration into an upfitter switch. I have plenty of light out back any time I need it.

Thanks for the information 67L48. The truck came with the rear wheel well liners, so no need to worry about that. Considering just swapping the bulbs of the headlights to the LED. For some reason they dont put the LED bulbs into the headlight assembly that has the black bezel (or whatever its called). The rear lights was something I was considering.

As for towing, there are some grades in Maryland, but usually only encounter those when going to PA. Never had issues with the Ecoboost, but looking forward to feeling the comparison.

Does your truck have a break-in period? Normally manufactures don't recommend towing until the engine has been broken in per the manual.

Excellent point. I have seen it both ways with regard to towing. Some say you can break it in exactly how you intend to use it. Others say you should break it in before heavy work. For us, the truck was used as a demo by one of the service managers, so there was 2200 miles on it at the time of purchase. It wasnt known until we went for the test drive. We got them to knock the price down about $1700 because of the miles.

We grew up from the 2016 Ford Ecoboost to the F250 gasser in 2018. smart choice.

we couldn't afford a diesel in Canada where the price is $6.12 a gallon

The reason is that it's a completely different headlight assembly and reflector design. LED bulbs produce light differently than incandescent bulbs. Tossing in an LED bulb into a housing (reflector design) built for incandescent bulbs has varying degrees of success.

Generally, LED bulbs in housings made for halogen bulbs will look a lot brighter to onlookers, but have reduced throw distance and maybe some strange beam patterns for the driver. All of this is dependent on the LED bulb quality and the vehicle you're "upgrading."

Here are three pictures showing a Toyota running a premium halogen bulb (driver side) and an LED replacement bulb (passenger side). The beam pattern is messy on the LED and not all that much brighter for the driver. In fact, when thrown longer, there is complete lack of lighting in some of the areas. Again, the reflector design doesn't control the LED-generated light. For the oncoming person, it's immediately obvious how the beam pattern is no longer controlled properly; there is massive glare and light scatter. Light that is lost to glare and upward throw is not present to illuminate the road, ditch, and other things you care about.
