Pics from back in the day I got from the Fort Fiends site (Disneyworld)...noticed TV used to pull their campers!
Don't sweat the numbers too seriously when trying to figure out what you can pull...These guys didn't and I'm sure they weren't locals ,)

Alternately: Why not just use a tow vehicle that's capable of pulling your trailer? The manufacturers even take the courtesy of telling you the GVWR, payload, and tongue weight, which makes it easy to figure out. *shrug*

Now you did it.

I still remember camping as a kid with a friend's family in their one wheel, home built PUP that was pulled by an early 70's station wagon.

I have crunched so many numbers this summer, I've nearly solved the Grand Unified Theory

That said, after the first of the year, I'm going to start my search for a used F350 SRW. For my needs, I'll never exceed the capacity of that truck. It will be my wallet I'm more concerned with then.

well your wallet might be a little lighter but you will pull what you want, that's a true statement for sure. Lots of used f350 around here. Problem no f250 here...

Those old 70s Ford LTDs, Big Buicks, Olds 98s, Chevy Impalas, Plymouth Fury's probably had 440, 454, 460 CU engines & frames heavier than today's pickups. But not too campers weighed over 5000 lbs either. We used air shocks. My 73 Terry, & 88 both were 22 feet & weighed under 4500 lbs. Have no idea of tongue weight as most of the scales I ussd back then were only one pad & never worried about it. My 1970s F150's were were built more like the 350s today. The 350s back then were not used as much 3-5 mpg towing & rode ilke a buckboard

In the mid eighties I had a shasta travel trailer and we had a trip planned when my truck broke down. My father-in-law suggested I borrow his ford sedan with a 460 police interceptor engine. The first time I floored it to pass someone I thought the hitch was going to separate and leave the trailer behind.

I towed a 22 ft 5000 lb trailer with a Grand Marquais. Had soft as a pillow suspension. Cranked up the Reese hitch and ezlift sway control and camped. I towed the same trailer with a e150 club wagon and finally a GMC Safari with that dreaded 4.3 l V6. Had 3 kids an a EW. Never hit anything or wasn't able to stop.

In those days those cars all had v 8 engines and a steel frame plus those trailers shown are not the ones you see today. Get what you need to haul for your needs but if your needs are going through the mountains or real long distance get something with enough guts to do so.

X2 on most posts above. To get cars lighter and more fuel efficient, all the "margin" has been wrung out of them. Not smart to compare them to today's cars.

And those '70's cars probably got around 12 mpg without the trailer and probably about 6 mpg with the trailer; but then, gas was only about 35 cents before 1974.
