P3 overload no brakes

I have a 2013 Toyota tundra that I put a P3 in and I also had got the pig tail already made up to make it easier. Ok I fully understand how the controller works and the boost functions. So I had it set with boost 1 on and controller at 5.0 I hit the brakes and work at first then I would get the message overload no brakes. So I turn it down to and it would stop and only do it every once in a while. I read in the owners manual that to much currant is being sent to the brakes so I took the boost off had it set at 5.5 and it would give me the message again so I now have it turned down to 4.5 and it seems to be working better. I tried hitting the brakes hard once and it came in once and didn't do it again. My truck weight is 6800 pounds and camper weight at the time was 5000 pounds but will be around 6500 when loaded. So it would make sense to have boost off. I emailed tekonsha and they said I have a short on the blue out put wire some where. I am not so sure if I believe this it works fine during normal braking but happens when I hit them hard. I haven't had a chance to take a look at the harness but I know when I did the install everything was good and all wires looked fine. Has anyone had this issue before? Thanks for any help.

never had that issue ... towed a 7000 lbs cargo trailer for over 45,000 miles.

I didn't have a "No Brakes" light up on my old motorhome when towing, turned out to be a bad ground on the 7 way socket motorhome side.

I went and checked and nothing wrong with the blue wire at all. I unplugged checked and made sure that it was secure on both side of the pig tail. Nothing. Anyone else have any suggestions. I still think its applying to much I just need to find the sweet spot. Just because it works fine during normal slow stops makes me think how could there be a short.

This could be a bad brake coil, (works when normal but does not like max volt/amps) if that is what it is it will eventually short out on normal braking too.

So I guess the place to begin is to take off all brake drums and check for bad wires.

I would disconnect all my magnets and check each ones resistance. While all disconnected, I would also check for shorts on your trailer wire. It should be open. Then, if no exceptions, I would hook them up one at a time until I get that message. Its just timely troubleshooting.

Ok so here is my next question. The P3 has a alarm that says open circuit. Would that be the warning I would be getting rather than overload?

If you have a short to ground in the wiring or the brake coil it be overload. if you had a simple broken wire not touching grount or an open coil it would be open circuit.

I am an ex mechanic but I am not really familiar with trailer brakes I did not have to work on many. I am sure they are not to complicated. I feel like I should know this but when you refer to coils is this the same as magnet. Thanks

They work like a solenoid, just think of it as a starter solenoid.best way to test would be disconnecting them one at a time and going through what you did before.

Is your truck new and your camper one you have been pulling with another TV? From your post it sounds like you bought a new truck and installed a P3. Is this right? If so, you must have been pulling your camper with another TV without a problem. Could it be you have a P3 defective out of the box? It does happen....

Yes you are exactly right. I had a Nissan Titan before and a different TBC. With my tundra I bought a new P3 for it.

I kind of thought this maybe because I didn't have a problem before but my old tbc is nothing like this P3 I just figured the diagnostics this P3 has showed me I had a problem or that I was applying to much force to the brakes.

I will tell you one other thing. When I was trying to do the first set up to turn it up till the brakes lock up then back it down. Well from my first initial set up I tried this and I could feel the brakes lock up hard and then they would completely cut out and it would give me the message. Could one magnet bad cause that to happen. It seemed odd to me.

Maybe one brake but not all brakes. You said you had a pigtail made up? Did your Tundra have the tow package and the 7 pin connector already installed and all you had to do is plug the P3 harness into the under dash connector?

The blue wire goes to all brakes. Checkout this diagram from e-trailer. http://www.etrailer.com/faq-wiring.aspx
It just seems strange your problem began with new truck and new controller. Maybe you need to suspect the controller or the wiring harness
