Performance Chips

Has anyone used one of these and if so did it work as advertised? Any cons for this device would be helpful too

I put a Superchip in my 08 Ram 2500 Hemi and all it did was make the tranny shift wanky in tow haul and dropped my towing mileage from about 7.5 to 8 down to 5.5 or 6 and the truck did not pull as well..

I'd be very leary of claims of 30 more horsepower and 10% better fuel mileage. I believe that you will see a small gain in Hp but the mpg won't be better. From years of experience racing, it's impossible to make more power using less fuel.

Get a programmer. 5Star has a great reputation, although another company may specialize in Toyota.
Are you a member of a Toyota or Tundra forum? That would be a good place to get some info.
Some programmers come with 3 tunes and/or you can get a tune specific to the weight/tranny/engine.
You can reset the speedo if your tires are not stock size, change shift points, etc.

I put a Five Star programmer on my 08 F250 V-10. I wanted a better shift pattern in hilly country ( it did that). The fact that it was a lot faster when not towing didn't hurt. BSEG. No real change in mileage.

I have an Edge Evolution with custom tunes from Power Hungry Performance in my 04 F150. I didn't like how the tranny shifted and also throttle response was horrible, they chip has take care of all of that and then some. It did gain me some more power also I think, either more power or the tranny shift points just made that big of difference that if feels like more power. Mileage didn't change at all towing, running empty it may have gone up a bit but nothing to write home about.

I had my pcm tuned from wait4meperformance.com on my 2005 Silverado 2500hd. 6.0L

I drive 40 miles a day one way each day.
30 miles 2 lane 10 miles interstate.

My shifting in tow/haul was much better.
Fuel mileage was steady 12-13 mpg without tune.
Fuel mileage was steady 13-14 mpg after tune .
1 mpg over 26 gallons netted me 26 more miles per tank per week x 52 weeks means an extra 1352 miles per year.
Savings of 97 gallons or about 340.00 dollars.
I gained another average mpg by adding a hayden 18" electric fan that was controlled via thermostat cooling the truck vs the power robbing clutch fan.

Several tankfulls I averaged 15 mpg others at 12 mpg .

I have EFI Live on my Chevy diesel, gained 8mpg empty driving and 3mpg towing. 5 custom tunes all switchable on the fly. But as mentioned earlier check out a tundra forum and see what they are using.

I would be leery of those claims, they seem pretty far fetched for a naturally aspirated gas motor. But IF it works sign me up for one on our Sequoia!

Thanks for all the replies I was just looking for a way to gain a little HP in my 4.7 V8 without having to buy a new truck. Not really in the cards right now.

I also have an Edge for my F250 7.3 diesel. I got it for the tow level and was a little disappointed when all I really experienced was the quick change between gears. I recently programmed "Racing" and was extremely pleased with the change in acceleration AND increased mpg. From 18-19 to 21-22. I haven't towed at that level so glad to see several have. I expect to see a significant improvement in uphill towing. I also dropped it into Performance and, well, Racing is plenty for me. Edge is a fine product. I got the shroud and it matches dash almost perfectly.
