$9200??? We're on 1-1/4 acre with a 2000 sq ft house and 30x40' RV garage and pay $1400 real estate tax yearly. And we were looking to move! Think we'll just stay put.

That probably depends on where you live in each state because our insurance is nothing like that at all. It's cheap.

In California we do have personal income tax on vehicles, it's just hidden in our annual license plate renewal fees. When you buy a vehicle, new or used, you pay sales tax, a transfer tax, licensee fee, and probably a few others tossed in. Then, every year you pay your license plate fees and the personal property tax is hidden in there. We pay property taxes on our real property.

For example, the last year that I owned a 2007 32' Holiday Rambler Endeavor diesel pusher (2015), my license plate renewal fee was $1,250, which was more than my insurance premium.

California companies pay property tax on the furnishings, equipment, computers, etc. in the offices and manufacturing plants. Retailers pay a "floor tax" for the value of their inventory once a year, usually January 31st.

In San Diego right now, the proposal to build a new stadium for the Chargers includes a new "fee" for hotels to charge their guests. Opponents to the stadium say this is a new "tax", not a "fee". Why, because an increase in "Tax" requires a 2/3 vote of the people, where a "fee" increase only requires a 50% vote.

That's absolutely robbery. How can our citizens let this kind of thing happen? And we keep voting the same idiots into office every time! What is wrong with us? Here in Florida there is no such tax and no income tax. Only home owners' tax and that tax is LOW. We pay about $600 tax a year on our our home and we have a fine home in a good neighborhood.

That may be about the real property yearly tax, but here in Texas we take a hit on the Sales Tax, but only pay about $79.00 a year for cars, not sure what the TT will be since we have not had it a year yet. BUT, no income tax. We still come out head than a lot of you.

Last year I left Calif. for the tax benefits and inexpensive housing in Nevada. A few months later I moved back to Calif. Fortunately my house was still available. That was alot of work to come to the recognition that I'd rather be here in Calif and just have to suck it up and pay more in taxes and everything else.

If you have your vehicle registered in Va and have "T" tags on you truck, you get no break on taxes, It is considered a work vehicle. I have a f250 diesel and I run regular car plates, and get a pretty good tax relief. The weight limits change, but I have never been stopped and put on the scales. The weight police here are more concerned about commercial vehicle, logging trucks that are WAY over loaded. There are a lot of f250's running passenger plates in Va. The taxes are still to much .

In NY. Truck plates are 125 for two years. Car is about 100 for two years. RV is about 90 per year. Have many relatives in Florida and after comparing everything paid in both states it comes out really close. States get their funds in many ways and what one pays for vehicle tax another pays in income tax. Interesting info so far but not to surprising.

Hmmm, I think 38 of 50 states collect income taxes on retirement benefits to one extent or another.

According to 2014 estimates by US Census bureau, Michigan is about 31st in taxes collected per person. Could be A LOT worse.

We're over on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. We bought a 2016 Ford F250 Diesel 4WD late last year. Our Personal Property taxes are $1340.70 this year after the tax relief. Should gradually decrease each year. Our assessed value rate here for PP is $3.72 per $100. The truck we replaced was a 2005 Ford F250 Diesel, also a 4WD but it was also "Off Road" which meant it had steel plates underneath, making it heavier and throwing it into the commercial class so it did not qualify for any tax relief. We tried several times to argue the case that the truck was not being used commercially, but the tax relief is based on the weight of the truck and they look at the paperwork and the weight is the weight. I've seen trucks like our old one with regular tags and wandered how they got away with it. Must know someone in DMV. I don't have handy what we were paying for the old truck, but I don't think it was that much less than the new one and it won't be many years before the new one will be less than the old one.
What we pay for our 2015 Cedar Creek alone is $1000 more than what we pay for Real Estate taxes on our house and acre of land. Our Real Estate tax is .61 per $100 in our tax district. At least they started splitting the amount due making half due in June and half due in December.

Wow. That's amazing. How awful.

Here in NC, my 2015 F350 renewal just came in. Tags are $139. Property tax is $313.71 ($277.57 for the county and $36.14 for "fire tax").

Do you live up near DC in a "high dollar" county? Like Alexandria or something similar?

Personal Property Tax on vehicles

In Maryland, no personal property tax on vehicles or RV. There is a tag fee for each, but minimum.

NM taxes aren't low

  1. Here in NM we pay personal property tax when you transfer the vehicle. The one time hit is 3% of the purchase price. People always ask me to say I sold the vehicle for less. It's funny how the same people who vote the money grubbing politicians in are the ones who cheat on their taxes. My real estate tax is $3400 a year, more than the mortgage on my first house. Registration is based on weight, not value, and is pretty reasonable.

PA no property or excise tax on vehicles. $39 for car registration. TT 9 year plates $19 year. Trucks vary dependent on size.
