Personal Property Tax - What do you pay?

I am interested to know what other members all over the country pay for personal property tax on their tow vehicles, if your state/county charges a tax.

I have a 2015 Chevrolet 3500HD 6.0 SRW. In Virginia, I pay over $2,400.00 per year for personal property tax for this truck. I think this is ridiculous.

Where are you, what is your tow vehicle and what do you pay?

Bruce

Here in Rhode Island..
My 2006 Toyota Tundra with 157k mi. I am paying $389 this year.
My 2011 RAM 1500 with 40k mi I am paying $498 this year.

We used to have a 10-year limit that the state would continue to charge property tax, but they needed more money a few years back and did away with that.
So no matter how old your vehicle is and no matter what condition it is in, if it is registered here in RI you will be paying tax on it.
And by the way, the state places the value on your vehicle, they dont use KBB or any other normal source for vehicle values.
My old 93 F150 with 147mi the state was valuing that truck for tax purposes at $6400 (just 4-years ago).. that was when I sold it and bought the RAM 1500 because I was paying more in taxes than the vehicle was worth.

This is not personal property tax, but my trailer tags were $30 for a permanent tag. I don't remember my PP taxes, but it isn't much. Maybe $50 a year. Insurance $120 year. I spend more than that for one upgrade I saw on here.

The first trailer I registered in AR.. the lady said do you want a permanent tag? I was like...MMMMM. How much? She said $20 Hey throw it on me. I was used to an annual in Texas being $50-60.

In South Carolina, you might expect to pay $1,200 on the truck but the real kicker was the Fifth Wheel, over $2,000. We quickly decided to buy a lot in a really nice beach resort style RV Park and transfer tags. After all expenses for the lot, we save over $500 a year over paying taxes. Some states are different on primary resident requirements, if too restrictive, a safeguard might be paying $150 (FL fees) to form an LLC, making your lot a business.

Bruce what part of VA are you in? Our locality here is $5.25 per $100. The taxes here are crazy.

Arkansas pays P.Prop Tax once a year on all personal property, NOT solely on the vehicle at time of purchase.

I own a bunch of 'stuff'........big boat, little boat, Side by Side ATV, 16' ATV trailer, Fifth Wheel Travel Trailer, 2 Pickup Trucks, and a housefull of furniture......and I paid $909.00 July 1 for my annual P.Prop Tax bill.

No personal property tax here in Michigan, but feel lucky you don't live here.
2017 MB SUNSEEKER - sales tax $5,100
Plates $320
Insurance $1800
Sales tax on everything but groceries 6%
State income tax 4.35%
State income tax on all pension income over $40,000 is 4.35%

what do we get for it - lousy roads, fire departments that never lose a foundation, and a dictatorship style government. If they don't like the voters outcome on legisilation, the dictatorship just passes an identical piece and add a budget rider to it... NO MORE VOTING ON THAT LEGISLATION, cause now its a budget issue!!!!

Michigan is now ranked about 5th in the worst state to live in catagory.

I've never heard of such a thing either. That said here in Minnesota we are one of the higher taxed states. I can't imagine having to pay property tax over and above the state tax on vehicles and rv's.

$600 a month Is crazy... what does that do to the value of an RV? Buy a cheap one and in no time it would total it. If I paid $600 on a payment for the RV I would be mad.

Some people here pay $500-1000 a month in property taxes. Not me. I want my monies to pay for the property not the taxes. My fathers 60K property is $1500 year in property taxes(Texas) and it is too high. Most properties don't appreciate that much a year. Sad.

Not sure it would have helped, but you did know you could have put the camper on at 6% as a 2nd residence versus the 10.5% of the fair market value.

In IL, we don't have personal property taxes. We do however have sky-hi property (real) taxes. I pay a ton of taxes on my home.

I never said Michigan was a bad state to live in. actually except for the winters, Michigan is one of the most beautiful states in the nation.
We have spring, summer, and fall.
We have the great lakes,
we have a state park system that is fabulous
we mountains
we have nightlife
we don't have to board a helicopter to make it to an emergency room.

I live in a rural area and still have 100 or so restaurants that I can visit within a half hour,, probably 30 within 15 minutes.. Not many places in America can say the same. Some metropolitan areas are lucky to have 30 total.

Retirees are leaving in droves and I can't blame them.
The current administration increased the retirees taxes 1 billion dollars so he could give it to his campaign donors...That tomfoolery took 1 billion dollars out of the Michigan economy.

It is simple ECON 101. if a person has no discretionary money to spend, He will buy nothing but the necessities. Don't try and get a businessman to understand that simple fact though.

Over the last ten years or so Michigan has gone from one of the top ten wealthiest states to one of the 20 poorest.

this is what you get when you live in a dictatorship

I agree but they charge so little for income and hard property tax they need to make up the shortfall.

I'm in Fairfax County in Northern Virginia -- the small part of Virginia that pays for the big part of Virginia. I have to get out of here.

Move to Florida. No personal property tax on either the truck or the fifth wheel, relatively inexpensive real estate taxes, no state income tax 6 1/2 % state sales tax plus 1/2 % local for a total of 7% sales tax. Having lived in Taxachussetts and North Carolina recently I can tell you that this place is heaven from that standpoint. I think (not sure) that my truck tags are $30.00 per year and the same with the 5th wheel. If not it's not much more. Insurance is based on the community in which you live. More expensive for instance in Orlando and Tampa than it would be in Zephyrhills.

No personal property tax in Oregon....or sales tax either. State income tax is a bit high...9%, but a great place to live. That is why all the rich Californios are moving north.
