Polishing scratches out of windshield?

My truck windshield has developed fine scratches from the wipers because of road grime. At night, light is scattered because of the scratches.

The windshield is as old as the truck, 12 years. Is there a way to polish the scratches out of the windshield glass?

0000 steel wool works well.
Make sure you use compressed air to remove any bits left as they will rust.

Soft scrub on a buffing pad if really, really bad.

I can’t remember where I bought it, but I found a polishing compound for glass and it works great with a polishing pad on an angle grinder. Make sure to tape off trim and painted surfaces before applying.

My 2000 X has had its fair share of stones, dust, and road effluent striking it over the years and the windshield refuses to crack or break. It is indestructible but I can barely see though it.
I have tried several different products including a suggestion in Popular Mechanics and none of them worked. I am going to bite the bullet after throwing away good money and time and have the windshield replaced.

I read a lot of broken windshield stories from Alaska travelers. Enjoy a trip to AK, then let insurance pay for windshield. :-)

I just ordered Cerium Oxide and pads. I'm going to try and polish the scratches out. We shall see.....
