Your MPG is right on the money. I get 9-10 mpg towing with my 04 Suburban 5.3. I don't have the Active fuel Management on my 04 5.3 either. 04 last year of 5.3 without that AFM garbage.
13-15 mpg when I tow with my 01 7.3 Excursion and with a 40 gal tank I don't stop as much.

Your Jayco (single axle, I'm betting) was probably 7 ft wide, the new one is 8 ft wide; that's another 7 sq ft of sail, plus I'm sure the new one weighs a lot more than the old one.
With my Mini LIte, I was getting 9.5-10 mpg with my 2009 Silverado 1500, 5.3L with a 4 speed tranny and 3.73 gearing. I think you're doing great. I'm actually lucky to get 9mph with my 2500HD, 6.0L

some great responses I guess my mpg is in the ballpark for my new setup. (chevy 1500 rockwood 2304ks) The 17z was a single axle . New TT is roughly 1500 lbs heavier, dual axle, bigger parachute . these things do not slice through the air. lots of drag.

As said before be happy with double digit mileage. The only way to better towing is buy a diesel. I tow a 2016 Rockwood 2504s with my 2016 4x4 eco diesel and I averaged 15mpg on 2800 mile round trip to Yellowstone. However without towing I get 28-30 at mph on the highway. However diesel cost more per gallon than gas at least here in CA

There are rumors that an Airstream pulls much easier due to it's shape, but that might be myth.
I have been thinking about adding a larger flip up fairing or spoiler to my roof rack in an effort to get wind up and over the camper, as well as around it. Almost thinking about a half cone shaped object similar to what you see on top of a big rig.

Weight has little to do with the milage, it is the drag from the frontel area as said above.
I had a 2010 1500 5.3 (I do not think you have an Allison trans, that's the diesel) and got about 200 miles per tank(9 or so mpg) . I had a 8k or so pound gray wolf.
Got 13 to 14 when I moved to the diesel with same trailer. The new 5er, much heavier, I get pretty much the same mpg, 12 to 13.

You can do your own searching but I believe the return on their cost is a very long time almost not worth it. Big rigs travel a half million miles a year so it pays to save cents. Your 15,000 miles a year towing (being generous as I do not know you) would never break even most likely.

Your plan makes sense if you tow something with a flat face on it. I have seen this over years and your solution is good. Have you ever shopped for a "wing" and the installation? Your savings may not keep you ahead unless gas hits $4 a gallon again, but who knows...
Safe Travels...

Just upgrade my tv from an 08 durango 4.7 to a 17 yukon 5.3. We did one trip so far and it was from the hills in ct to the shore. Mixed back roads and hwy. Got 11mph down and 9 back. The d got around 9 mostly. I'm ok with that since not towing I went to 19.5 from 15.

Weight is one thing when towing. But a pickup and a trailer is an aerodynamic nightmare. Take a semi truck.... I can pull off 8 mpg with a class 8 semi with a 12.7L Detroit moving 32,000 lb of truck with 30,000 lb of cargo. Sure, diesel helps in that, but a semi and van trailer have significantly better aerodynamics. They are matched in side to side and top to bottom dimensions and there is only a 30" gap between the back of the sleeper and the trailer. I don't think people really appreciate how nasty the aerodynamics are with a pickup and travel trailer. And it is the biggest negative to fuel economy. Driving style comes in second. The second one, a driver can improve a little. The first, it is what it is. Terrible.
Just look at the picture above this post. Aerodynamic nightmare compared to a semi. Nothing anyone can do about it but realize that is going to cost a lot of fuel to move it. Especially on a windy day.

Just got home from a 700 mile trip and got just over 10 mph, mixed mountain and flat highway. Max speed 60 mph with my Titan gassed. Truck and trailer crossed the scales at 12,970 lbs.
Best way to max the fuel economy, regardless of engine or fuel type is to slow down. In reality that won't really increase total trip driving time all that much and usually keeps the blood pressure down

Indeed! Whether it is my semi truck or my pickup (towing or not) and my Cadillac CTS. I hardly ever exceed 65. With both the semi or the pickup towing, I typically run about 62 mph. The pickup is right in the most efficient RPM for the 6.0L gasser in it at that speed in 5th gear. I stay out of 6th when towing. Same for semi. It is right in the best RPM band of the engine in 16th gear at 62. It has 18.
More times than not, if one slows a little, they lose very little time. Faster speeds and you are slowing and speeding up more often due to traffic. Staying at a moderate speed and things stay more consistent so it leads to better fuel economy. Hey... you are on a camping trip! Slow down and enjoy it. Not like you are trying to get to work!

First post here so hello to everyone. We just got our first camper so it's been a fun adventure as well. We have a 25ft micro lite. Love the camper. Towing with a 2015 Ram 1500 crew cab 4x4 5.7 hemi. Usually on the highway at 70 I get close to 20-21mpg. Towing it home on the interstate keeping it at 65 I wasn't even getting. It was a windy day.
That was quite a wake up call. Some of the long trip adventures I'd been thinking of got put on hold lol. Luckily there's a lot of great areas around here. I figured I'd get closer to 12 (or at least was hoping)
We took it out last weekend, I kept it in tow haul and limited my speed to 55. Was able to get 10-almost 11 so definitely speed makes a difference. On longer stretches of 2 lane highway with cars lined up behind you it makes you feel like kind of a heel but I'll take that over 8mpg. It was only 5mph below the posted speed limit.
Glad to see this kind of mileage is normal though and that I don't have something unusual going on.

Another CT denizen. We were down at Aces about that time. Were you out during that monsoon that came through? Thought we might need the kayaks to get around East Lyme.

I have the same truck. Did you check the RPO codes on the glove box lid? The only 6-speed the gassers have is the Hydra-Matic. The Allison is for diesels. The Allison will not bolt up to a gasser. You cannot tell by the shifter, the same one is used for both 6-sp trannys.
RPO code:
MW7 Transmission, Allison 1000 6-speed automatic
MYD Transmission, 6-speed automatic, heavy-duty Hydra-Matic

Well, you might want to rethink that one. The Allsion was bolted up to the 8.1 gasser V8. And Fuso will be putting the current L96 6.0L V8 in some of their cab over work trucks later this year and will be putting the Allison 1000 from GM behind it. So, the Allison will bolt up to the GM gasser V8's.

I was just stating what I was told by my brother. He operates a 3rd party service center and said he has never worked on a gasser with an Allison.

2017 Silverado 1500, 5.3L, 8 speed, tow package, pulls my 2018 Rockwood ML 2304KS well.
Last fall we went from Fort Collins to Durango at the speed limit. About 900 miles total, uphill, downhill over several passes and got right at 10.0 mpg, just what I was expecting.
Total rig weight loaded is 11,900 lbs. All weights within specs. E2 hitch with no seperate sway control, and no sway. Ever!
Only had to slow down for Hondas and radar traps.

Consider the sway bars...
You may have been OK on that trip, but wait until the winds blow...then you'll be glad to have them!
