I am not a weight policeman by any means, but you are taking unstated falsehoods and leading people to believe they are true. Clearly W/D is not taken into account with any of the receiver manufacturers rated weights.

You are clearly reading what you want to read or not reading the material at all. No receiver manufacturer rates their W/D parts for the weight the way you implied it was rated.

As an example, Curt says: "TW - The Tongue Weight is the amount of the trailer's weight that is placed on the hitch ball by the trailer coupler. (To measure the tongue weight, use either a commercial scale or a bathroom scale with the coupler at towing height. When using a bathroom scale with heavier tongue weights, use the method shown and multiply the scale reading by three. "

None of the vehicle manufacturers hold your view either. As an example, Ford says: "Tongue Load or Fifth Wheel King Pin Weight – refers to the amount
of the weight that a trailer pushes down on a trailer hitch." That means the dead weight.

etrailer.com tells you how to measure tongue weight in relation to selecting a W/D hitch. https://www.etrailer.com/faq-weightd....aspx#Choosing
In this case, the TW is actually more than the stand alone tongue weight of the trailer and includes weight behind the truck axle for the simple reason, that weight also has to be taken into account to be distributed by the mechanical system purchased.

And while your example of the 400 lbs moved is good for the truck suspension, you are simply confusing the fact that the hitch/receiver has it's own rated (and marked) weight limits that stand alone.

1/2 ton trucks

2011 F150 XLT Supercab 163" wheel base, Eco-boost 3.5L, 3.73, 4 WD
8,200# GVWR package
Max Tow (trailer sway control, mirrors, TT brake controller) 11,200
Heavy Duty Payload package (2,393 payload, 7 lug, E rated tires)
GAWR front 4,050, rear 4,800
GCWR 17,100
CAT Scale TV 6,260 (passenger 182, 5r hitch 128, tool box 20, full tank), actual payload is 2,268. I weighed on another scale empty bed, full tank and passenger - 6,050. according to the manual payload includes fuel - full tank could be over 200.

I'll re-post my original statement as to why I started this thread in order to get this back on topic....

"I thought I would start a thread for members towing with a 1/2 ton to post up their TV's factory specs to see how much they vary and what members are towing using those specs.

This thread is not intended to start a debate about whether anyone is within specs or crazily overloaded....Just to see the variety of 1/2 ton specs out there."

If you can contribute to the topic, great. If you want to go off topic, please start another thread.

I'm looking to see specs like:
- GVWR
- GCWR
- GAWR for front and rear axles
- max. towing weight rating
- max. payload rating
- CCC

Also, things like cab size and wheelbase length since they seem to impact the specs.

Speaking to tongue weight, each and every GM truck is called out as maxing at 500 lbs when dead weight (no wdh used) and then calls out a max when using a wdh.

For instance, my 2016 Chev Silverado 1500 Crew Cab 2LT 4WD:
3950# Front
3950# Rear
7200# GVWR
15000# GCWR
Max dead weight hitch tongue 500, trailer 5000
Max wdh hitch tongue 1092, trailer 9100

I pull a 2013 Grey Wolf 26DBH that if my memory serves is about 7000 wet and about 650-700 tongue weight, and I use a basic wdh with bars on chains

Even a dual rear wheel diesel with a GVWR of 13,500lbs has the same 500/5000 dead weight rating when no wdh is used. I expect pretty well every OEM has that called out someplace... I'm a dealer so I see all the fine print from GM

I suspect the spec'd hitch weight is dependent upon the class of the hitch installed which is why I haven't asked for that spec. Owners can install a beefier aftermarket hitch but wouldn't install beefier axles and swap out the frame which are the contributors to the GVWR.

The site team has had to do a cleanup here. Please stay on topic of posting specs and not debating tongue weights or which truck would be better. This is not a can I tow this or should I tow this thread. This us an informational thread only. Also, please keep all comments civil. The site team doesn't want to have to close yet another truck thread down.

I'm confused. My 2015 Silverado 1500 LTZ CC 4WD owner manual states:
1500 Weight-Carrying 363 kg (800 lb)
1500 Weight-Distributing 544 kg (1,200 lb)

And that matches the sticker on the hitch, and that matches what GM engineering told me in regard to a 2013 Silverado, when I contacted them due to a different spec on the hitch vs. the owner's manual.

SPECS:
  • 5.3L V8
  • 6-Spd Trans
  • 4-Door Crew Cab
  • Overall length: 230.03
  • Wheelbase: 143.5
  • Axle: 3.42
  • GCWR: 15000 lbs.
  • GAWR for front and rear axles: 3900 lbs.
  • max. towing weight rating: 9200 lbs
  • max. payload rating: 1662 lbs

Post Your 1/2 Ton's Specs

Oldest truck here

1999 Chevy Silverado 1500 ext cab short box. 4x4, Z71, 5.3L with roadmaster active suspension assist kit.

GVWR - 6400 lb

FAWR - 3925

RAWR - 3750

The manual says max towing is 7500 lbs. Max hitch with WD is 1000. Not sure what the GCWR is as the truck might be to old for that spec. The max standard payload is 1700.

Nice, a little less trailer rating but otherwise seems to have stayed the same.
