Pulling my Chevy Colorado

Do any members here pull a Chevy Colorado behind their MH?

I'm curious as to what you use for the setup AND do you disconnect the positive or negative side of the battery.

I'm getting ready to start ordering my parts and want to make sure I get the correct items.

Thanks,
Ken

I can't help, but wanted to tag this post as I am planning on buying the same truck in the near future to pull behind my Berkshire.

I LOVE the truck.

I think I'm going with the Blue Ox Base plate and tow bar. Not 100% settled on the rear light setup and probably the Patriot braking system.

Probably take me at least two days to put the base plate on.

I assume you have a four wheel drive? I read that the transfer case has to be the two speed to tow it.

I looked at the Blue Ox instructions. Seems to be relatively easy since it bolts where the tow hooks would normally be. But my current tow bar is a Roadmaster so I have to look to see how to adapt it.

BTW, do you know how much your truck weighs? I was considering the Colorado at it seems to weigh over 1000 pounds less than a Silverado.

I believe it's in the vicinity of 4000LBS, but not 100%. I have the 360hp, so I wasn't too concerned.

Yes, I have the transfer case to set to neutral. Manual says to disconnect the battery. Other than that, pretty much standard.

I watched the video for putting the base plate on a Colorado at etrailer. I figure two days because I'm not very mechanically talented, but do not want to pay over $1000 for someone to install it. (not because the don't deserve 1k for it, I just don't have it)
Going to take my time with it.

To be more specific about the transfer case, I read there were 2 types available in the Colorado but only the 2-speed transfer case could be towed. Think I read it in the Dinghy Towing Guide that comes out each year. I am not sure about this.

Mine Berk is a 360 also, but I might have to change tow bar if the truck weighs more than 5,000. And I figure the lighter the better.

You run a separate wire directly from the battery

Here is the 2015 owners manual for the Colorado.

The section on dingy towing starts at page 358.

I have towed my 2015 Colorado around 5000 miles. No problems. I disconnect the
negative terminal and I have never lost anything when I hook it back up. I was surprised
at the weight on my Z71. Pulled across Cat scales and it weighed 4700 lbs.

I have a 2016 Colorado Crewcab 4x4 that I tow four wheels down. I use the blue ox avail and the brake buddy stealth. I also had a negative battery cable disconnect switch installed. Then just follow the instructions to put it in 4 down neutral. Work great have not had a problem.

OK what did you guys do for rear lights?
I have read there is something special to wire since there are 2 brake light bulbs on each side (or something like that).

Brake Lights

I took out the back tail light assembly and drilled an extra hole in each and put an extra light bulb in each one. I then ran a wire to the front of the truck and hooked it to my motorhome just as I would a trailer.

Works great

Etrailer.com has the kit to do that.
But it does look tight there for another bulb.

I cant speak to the colorado but I do use a blue ox plate and bar, patriot brake, a trailermate plug in adaptor to run the toad lights (diodes), and a battery buddy (diodes keeps toad batt from feeding to the coach batt) to keep the toad battery charged. I pull fuses in my jeep to keep the brake pedal signal in the toad from feeding back to the coach and use the aux 12v plug in the console for the patroit brake (the internal batt for b/u only). If I was pulling the neg toad batt cable I would run a 12 volt access to the cab for the patriot and use the batt buddy (about 1/2 the size of a pack of cigs).

I used the 7 pin coach side to 6 pin toad side cable. You will have to install a recpt in the base plate. With the trailermate wiring I went down inside the frame to the rear lights. To do the job right encase your wire run in (black) wire tubing. Total time for mechanical install was about 4 hours, and about 3 hours for wiring. For the first few months I used a light bar on the rear hitch of the toad, finally got around to the wire portion of the job. It has been problem free for 10, 000 miles....

If you get a base plate that uses lugs besure to buy a spare, never needed a spare but if you were to "lose" (someone needing it more than you) one then you are done toading.... and wally world does not carry replacements...
