Pulling trailer with 1500 Dodge Ram

Hi

Just some advice for traveling in the mountains heading down 75. It’s a V-6.
Trailer is a 25 feet RTL 2506s. We have taken 75 from Ohio to Florida at least 20 times. But never with a trailer.

We need way more info on your truck.
Year, engine size, cab size, bed size, 4x4 or not, factory tow package or not, rear end ratio and payload capacity.
Just saying v-6 isn't enough.

Most 1500 Ram Truck Owners install AIR BAGs inside their Rear Coil Springs! I bet you will not use Top Gear or Overdrive! Do you have "Tow/Haul"? You will see a BIG DROP in Fuel Mileage also! Make sure you use your 4 Way Flashers going up "Gellico,Mt.Tenn."! Youroo!!

Listed dry weight looks to 5109 pounds...

Here is the link to where I found info:

https://rv.campingworld.com/rvdetail...20k-LVN1561059

I'm thinking that by the time that thing is loaded the truck and engine might not be enough for the mountains.

The issue will be the heavier tongue weight of a front kitchen floorplan and the Ram 1500's poor payload capacities, unless it's a 2019 model.
With a fictional "dry" tongue weight of 720lbs, add the weights of batteries, water, options and cargo, the loaded tongue weight could balloon up to 1000lbs.

I started out pulling my Keystone Springdale 256RLL but it wasn’t long before I went to a 2500 diesel. My Silverado 1500 just didn’t like Black Mountain outside of Asheville NC. I got the best fuel mileage pulling that camper with the 1500 Silverado. When I first brought the 1500 I didn’t take the truck home, I had the muffler cut off and a pump pipe welded in place with dual exhaust pipes. That truck sounded so cool. When I pulled the camper with the Silverado you couldn’t even hear yourself think, DW said something had to go, so I brought a Silverado 2500 diesel. I should have kept the Springdale, it was easy to park and easy to pull along with the Silverado 1500

What year? What transmission speeds, 4 speed, 6 speed?

You might have a better chance pulling that trailer over the mountains using I-71 south in KY to I-65 from Louisville to Nashville... much lower hills and easier that way...

I could not keep up with my 5.2L V-8, 2001 Dodge van with 3 speed + OD... pulled in line with the 45 MPH trucks going up the mountains with that rig...

My current 2014 RAM with 5.7 and 8 speed is NO PROBLEM at all...
of course my GVRW is about 4800# which is a bit lighter than your 6000#+ trailer

If your Ram is a late model with the 3.6l Pentastar V6 and 8 speed transmission I think you will be fine making the trip, but an older truck that doesn’t have this engine/tranny combo, no way would I attempt this trip.

You will be just fine. We pull a 2504s with a 2014 Silverado with a V6 and a 6 speed. Pulled to Florida down I75. Had to drop to third gear on big hills. You have more gears and a better axle ratio than me. Going up big hills, just get over in the right lane and manually drop gears until the truck pulls good. I usually go up steep hills in third gear at 35-3800 rpm. Find out the trucks “power range” and keep it there when climbing up big hills. Jay

First thoughts...have you ever been to a CAT scale fully loaded?

If you are doing this, make sure it is a dry day and take it easy. You're questions will be answered in the first 100 miles.

You mentioned you had tow haul mode so that is a gear selection option while towing. Later RJD

Still hasn't posted the payload capacity sticker weight.
The trailer is a front kitchen floorplan so it will have a heavier tongue weight than other MiniLites.
Also the u-dinette is in the front too.

Print is small but I think it reads payload is 1411. If so you will be over with 5 to 1 odds.
