Question about my hitch.

We recently upgraded TV from 1500 Dodge Ram to a 2016 Chevy 2500 HD. The hitch is a class 5 and the hooks on our TT safety chains won't fit. The hooks do not have a large enough throat. I looked around Tractor Supply and Camping World trying to find hooks that would work. Anyone else run into this issue with the Chevy class 5 hitch?

I had the same problem with my 2500HD. I bought 2 quick links from Home Depot.

I bought larger hooks from tractor supply. They are tight but fit when inserted the right way.

Yes. Chevy HD's now use Class IV receiver. You will have to get either a 2 1/2 inch Ball Mount, or use an adapter. Then, the HD Hitch itself won't allow safety chains. You can do what is mentioned above, or do what I did. I got two Grade 5 Eye bolts, and washers and nuts. I bolted them onto the receiver holes, upside down. Now I have eye bolts to connect to.

Not sure safety chains are a good idea to start with.....if I lose my trailer, I don't want to lose my truck also, and I would via 'accordian' type movement if hitch comes loose. Plus, I have never heard of a hitch coming loose but the safety chains NOT coming loose. Yet every hitch uses them. Maybe I just don't get out enough, dunno.

same problem

I had the same problem. I used a carbide burr to make the opening on the hitch a bit bigger and that seemed to work well enough. But they are still tight and if you don't attach them a certain way they won't go. Pretty aggravating I must say. I looked up the Quick-Link Chain Hook-Up, 10,000 lbs., 1/2" on Amazon and it was almost $50 for one of the links. $100 bucks seems out of line to me for this fix.

Guess the guy who doesn't use safety chains doesn't care who he kills behind him. PA requires safety springs so the hooks can't fall out (after people didn't survive the collusion).

This 3/8" hook will just fit on the truck's receiver. I added one link of chain to the hook for the safety chains from the trailer to hook on.

That's what I used..
I also got a 2.5" shank. The adapter was to sloppy for me.

Who doesn't use safety chains? Cannot say in all my years of camping that I ever saw anyone without safety chains.

Someone hinted at not using them. They sound like they do however, they just do not think they are a good idea

I had the same problem but with my 5th wheel & the breakaway switch. I use to lock it onto the jaw lever until I read how one 5th wheel took the hitch right out of the truck box. The bolts rusted off so now I use 2 of the quick links hooked to the breakaway lanard & I hook this to the base rail.

We were recently told by the OPP in our area that these type of hooks are no longer acceptable. They want the s type hook or the type with the spring latch. Seems silly but I guess they don't have to make sense - we only have to pay their wages.

I talked with a concrete contractor once whose worker did not want to bother with safety chains. The trailer mounted concrete pump came loose and crossed into opposing traffic, killing someone. When you tow you are responsible for your trailer, whether on the hitch ball or whipping around on the end of the safety chains.

Those stainless steel shackles look like they would work quite well, and only 10 bucks for a pair. Yes crazy people do crazy stuff that kills others all the time. Just look at all the stupid drivers on the road. They oblivious to endangering others as they text, eat, read books, play with their tablet or phone. I had a woman fly by me on the interstate in a huge SUV at about 90 MPH. I looked at her as she went by and she was putting on her makeup looking in the rear view mirror to do it. Now that is insane.

REVISION: I just looked at the rating on those SS shackles, only rated at 1400 lbs, I don't think they would be heavy enough. Just my opinion.
