I run Howes or Kleen in the winter here in Iowa. I put a good 2 cycle oil in every few tanks to help with lubrication.

That's a great point. And where some of the warranty issues come into play.

My diesels were just under 200K miles when I sold them and going strong. A buddy has a Dmax with 340K on it, and still going strong without any additives. Rather doubt the commercial trucks are adding anything. But if it makes you feel good, support the market!

Exactly. We run a fleet of 85 Class 8 diesel over the road trucks, with Cummins ISX-C, Cat Acerts and Detroit Diesel (MB) 60's and we do not use any additives in any of them, nothing, nada, zip.... and we are talking millions of accumulated miles in all weather conditions, from the desert heat to Canadian cold.

It's a 'feel good' thing for the consumer to add what we (trucking industry) considers 'snake oil'. If you want to go for it, it's your wallet, but in reality you don't need it.

We do add anti-gell to our bulk underground tanks and an algaecide (we use Power Service Bio-Kleen) but only as a preventave for stored fuel and anti-gell added at the fuel rack by the fuel transport company in the dead of winter.

Thats it folks.

I work in the industry so I know.

I do like to read along on threads like this, I find them to be humorous.

Hi
I would only use Power Service products and or Howe's in your fuel. I have provided a link to Power Service for you to review; Power Service.

On this link is a downloadable PDF that provides information on when and what to use and why. Not all fuel in the "US" is of the same quality with diesel fuel and in fact more and more is becoming 20% Bio blend. With this you will need a fuel Biocide to kill the microbes and other contaminates that could cause issues with the fuel pump and injectors.

Also change you fuel filters per the manufactures specification and do not use cheap auto parts store filters. Buy the name brand filters such as Fleetguard, Caterpillar, Paul filters, Baldwin's and or the manufactures brand. These protect the fuel pump from debris in the fuel oil per the manufactures requirements.

I haven't read all this...but yes. IMO you should use a fuel additive for many reasons... I use Scheaffers Diesel treat 2000 one gallon to 2000 gals of fuel. I just squirt a little in there. They also make a product called Neutra(older diesels) it will get you 10% and better MPG as opposed as using nothing. Seen it many times.

read all you want

Read the books provided by the engine and chassis mfg. Follow those instructions to the letter. Forget warranty, these folks have spent millions in research/ design and proving systems, for your benefit.

Another reason to use additives would be if you drive your diesel in very cold weather. Many diesel additives contain an anti-gel which prevents fuel line clogging in temps around 0 deg or lower. Probably not an issue in Georgia, but something to keep on your mind if you go far north in winter. (Get it? Georgia -- on your mind.)

I was thinking that diesel already had anti-gel additives added during cold months? Maybe not enough depending on your location?

I have a 2005 F-350 and use Lucas when the tempature dips. Engine runs smoother and I get a mile or two better MPH. My first choice is to fill up with Propel Diesel HPR, no additive needed with Propel and it's entirely plant based.
