Quick question what mode to tow in

Always towed with a 4x2, bought a 4x4, do you tow with in auto or 4x2?

On the road, always on 4x2 on tow mode.
Sometimes use the 4x4 in campgrounds, if on wet ground or grass to park the trailer.

I tow in 2wd. Save the 4wd for slick road conditions.
I also have a Siverado and use the tow mode button while on the road. Although, the way it changes the shift points really bogs me down on steep hills. It doesn't want to downshift when in tow mode on the three steep hills I climb out of home base. So I take it out of tow mode just for those three hills so I can maintain speed. The rest of the trip, back in tow mode.

Make sure you read the owners manual concerning operating in 4wd. Generally speaking you do not use 4wd on dry pavement, it could be useful while parking the trailer on wet grass, to provide more traction. Best advice find a dirt road and try it out in both 4wheel low and high. You really don't need to go muddin. However your vehicle will handle different in 4wd. It could also be used for rustic camp areas where you go boon docking. It is nice to have when used properly. Also use your tow mode, it changes your shift points. If you don't like the way it feels you can always take it out of tow/haul mode.

On my 2013 Silverado, tow mode also cause the generator to continue at a higher rate to increase voltage to the trailer batteries. Due to the computerized controls, the generator on Silverados will go down to around 11.5 if the computer see the "truck's" battery as full and just supply enough boost to keep the vehicle and accessories going. So in tow mode the generator would keep the output high allowing more juice to the trailer's battery(ies).
However, I don't see this on my 2015 Silverado.

Another way to keep the boost up is to manually turn on the headlamps.

If you have a 2WD option, then this is what you should use in typical dry conditions.

Most vehicles with 4WD will have either a 2WD mode as the standard mode for dry pavement, or a 4WD-auto (may be called AWD), as the standard mode. It would be very strange for you to have both a 2WD and a 4WD-Auto mode. Are you sure that your 4WD is not a part-time mode, for slippery conditions only? Your owner's manual should contain very specific instructions on when it's OK/NOK to use each mode.
