I drive around with my exhaust brake on all the time. It doesn't need to be in tow haul mode for it to work but tow haul and the exhaust brake works well together while towing. I believe mine works until it reaches a certain low rpm then it has no effect at all.

In tow/haul mode with the EB the truck will downshift through the gears as long as you keep your foot off the gas and on the brake. You just have to touch the brake. Without tow/haul and just lifting off the throttle it'll work until it gets down to about 1000 RPM's and then coasts. It'll downshift through the gears in tow/haul without the EB on the same way but without the awesome deceleration provided by the EB. At least that's how it works on my 2012.

Wifey calls mine the "Beast"... I've thoroughly enjoyed it, especially towing with it.

The exhaust brake has sensors that read a lot of things. The main thing it reads is deceleration. In TH mode it is the most aggressive but it will very it's power by the deceleration factor. If you are going up a steep enough grade that when you let off the pedal the truck loses speed fairly quickly it will not come on. If you are coasting to a light on level ground it will only come on enough to slow you at the set deceleration rate. This rate is different in TH mode and not in TH mode. My truck will apply the exhaust brake and also gear down with the TH mode off but just not as aggressively. When in the Smart Brake mode it senses the speed you want to go by when you let off and touch you break pedal. If you start over a hill and touch the pedal (hard enough to turn the brake lights on) at 40 , then the exhaust brake will do what it needs to do to keep you at 40 or to the best of it's ability. I have seen 150 HP on my exhaust break gauge but that I believe is max it will put out.

I don't believe there is a minimum speed the brake will work but there is a minimum RPM which is around 1000 RPM. My truck with 3.42 gears will work at 30 or so it just depends on the gear the transmission is in when you let off the go pedal.

I just hope I'm still as happy with it in 5 years as I am now. My last work truck went 340K miles with very little trouble. Of course it was maintained, but it only let me down once in all of that time... bad alternator at 225K miles. I do wish you the best of luck and many trouble-free miles with yours.

And we truck owners want to know what kind of mileage we are getting but for some unknown reason the manufactures don't feel the same unless it is that all powerful "1/2 ton"
On the newer ones you have to be in tow/haul mode as well. I have a 14. Bought it last year, and got rid of my 11 F350. No comparison. . You have made the right choice.

I can get 30mpg (Canadian gallons) if I drive 100km/h and no wind. It's ideal condition but it does happen

I have a RAM 2500 with 3.42 axel. Usually get around 20 mpg w/o tow and I had 16 mpg with a 21ft travel trailer and about 11-12 mpg with a 13k pound 5th wheel. It only has 2300 lb payload capacity however and I'm trading it in for a 3500.

I have an 05 Ram 3500 CTD. I've been towing a 16k fiver since new. Loads of power. Good mileage hitched and empty as well. Your fuel economy will improve when the odometer is north of about 50k miles.
