Ram 3500 Towing Questions?

We are looking to upgrade to a new Riverstone 39RKFB in the next few months and we will need a new tow vehicle. I am a current Ram 2500 owner and will be staying in the Ram family. I have located a 2013 Ram 3500 DRW Laramie 4X4 with AISIN transmission and 342 rear gear ratio. The Ram forum lists the max trailer towing weight of this set up at 20,500lbs. The Riverstone max weight is 19,084 so well below the max tow rating of the truck. I am looking for feedback from any owners of the truck as equipped. Is it up to the task? I have only read good reports on the AISIN transmission and of course the Cummins is legendary. Thanks in advance for the help.

Pete

It's not the tow rating you want to look at it's the cargo capacity. You'll reach that number long before the tow rating is exceeded. The typical 5th wheel puts 20% of entire trailer weight on the tow vehicle. With that trailer, your looking at 3800lbs of pin weight. You then need to add in the weight of the hitch, passengers plus any other non-factory items in the truck.

You would need to view the door jam sticker for that truck to see the available payload. Dodge says a max payload is 7390 but that is mostly with out options and lowest trim level. Later RJD

Thanks Tim for the reply. According to the Riverstone specs, pin weight is 3,084lbs. and the payload capacity of the truck is 5680lbs. The GCVW is 29,000lbs. I know these numbers can fluctuate a bit on weights. Really looking for anyone who has this truck and transmission and rear end and what they are towing with it.

Thanks,

Pete

My '12 DRW is setup slightly different as mine has the 68RFE transmission and a 3.73 American axle rear. My 5'r is also a bit lighter than what you are looking at, but I have absolutely no issues with my setup and love towing with my truck. I know my details are like comparing oranges and grapefruits, both citrus, but completely different. However, you already have a good feel on our trucks and what their capabilities are. If the numbers work for you and your intended RV, then you should have no worries with your choice of truck. I am curious why the truck is listed as a 3.42 rear though. Maybe a quick VIN check with a RAM dealer can give you a true "as built" list of how that truck is equipped. Maybe the Aisen trans allows for that gear ratio, but I know my 68RFE works very well in front of a 3.73 rear..

I can give you some real-world reviews. I have a 2015 3500 DRW Ram with Aisan and 3:42 gears. I pull a 2016 5th wheel and a 40' boat that is 14K, but not at the same time...LOL. I just weighted the 5th wheel loaded with full fuel in truck and 30 gal. of gas in the TH. Also had the Honda SXS in the garage and everything loaded in the TH....weighted in at 24K. The truck pulls both great and has never left me stranded and it just turned 180K miles

Thanks boatman, just the detailed info I was looking for. The truck I am interested in has 70K miles on it. Besides the usual wear items like tires, brakes, etc. what other parts should I be looking at to replace if needed? Good to hear you have had 180K reliable miles so far, from what I read the Cummins is just getting broken in then.

If you are buying from a dealer have them replace the water pump, there is a recall on them. I replace mine at 90K.
