RAM 6.4L Hemi?

So, anyone have one/driven one? I'm curious as to how well they do. I may be looking to upgrade my 1/2 ton Ram with a 5.7 to a 3/4 or 1 ton this spring. I tow a Wildcat 28BH 5th wheel and generally our trips are within 70 miles from home and we live in the flat lands. We try to be home 2 weekends for every one weekend camping so I don't pull that much. Right now my biggest towing problem is wind. I'm not sure I've ever had a tailwind but I get my share of head and cross winds! I think I'm wanting to stay with a gas engine.

Do you really need a different truck for such short trips on flat land?

I test drove both the 5.7 and 6.4 the past week. 6.4 was a much nicer drive. It appeared the 6.4 had a lot more low end torque and accelerated much easier than the 5.7. That will probably be my next truck in the next couple of months.

If you're gonna upgrade, make sure you have a 6 spd tranny with tow/haul.

One of the biggest things I need is a crew cab but not at the risk of a really short box. You can't have a crew cab with a regular size shortbox without going to a 3/4 ton. I also know that I'm over on payload, not sure how much but I'm guessing it's substantial by the time I get the family and all the crap a guy takes with.

You can get a Ram 1500 crew cab with both a short short bed (5ft) and short bed (6ft)

Just upgraded from the 5.7 to the 6.4 and so far love it. Its not going to set any records for fuel mileage but the power band makes it a dream to drive. Waiting on my fifth wheel brackets so I can get my hitch back in and test it on some towing. By the way Curt Mfg. makes brackets for the "non prepped" trucks. Looks like 15-151/2 is what shes gonna do on the interstate running 75-80 no load, But who buys a 3/4 ton for fuel mileage. The ride is pretty good, no where near as rough as my f-250. The cab noise is excellent. Has to be the quitest cab i've ever experienced. Dash gages are pretty cool also. You can pretty much set up the dash to display what you want. No I don't work for Ram but this is my second Ram after driving Fords all my life and I will go on record as saying they (IMO) have hit a home run with this.

If I ever get rid of my Sooper Doody I really want a 2500 Laramie Crew cab 4x4 with the 6.4 and air suspension. I think the new Dodge is far and away the nicest HD truck on the road. Interestling enough the sales guy that sold me my 2 previous Dodges, sold me our F250 and is now back at Ram. He thinks the new 6.4 compares very well to the 6.2 Ford.

I here you there. I traded a Dodge for the truck I have now. It was the best decision I have ever made.
