Ram 6.4L owners

Any Ram 2500 6.4L owners out there? DH and I are wondering if we just goofed. We signed docs for a new 2018 2500. We are trading in our very good 2011 with the hemi 5.7. It towed our TT great and no real problems. We wanted a few more bells and whistles.

But the 2018 says it should run on premium fuel. Ouch! Any 2500 owners with the bigger 6.4L running regular? Salesman says ok except maybe when towing... but we know we don't trust salesmen!

Thoughts? Experiences? We really don't like diesel so that wasn't an option we considered.

I’m not sure where you got that it needs premium/91+ octane but that’s not true. The 392 (6.4) in the SRT vehicles requires it, not the truck engine.

From the 2018 owners manual...

Quote:
5.7L/6.4L Engines

This engine is designed to meet all emis- sions regulations and provide satisfactory fuel economy and performance when us- ing high quality unleaded gasoline having an octane range of 87 to 89. The manufac-
turer recommends the use of 89 octane for optimum performance. The use of premium gasoline (Over 89 octane) is not recommended, as it will not provide any benefit over regular gasoline in these engines.

I have a 2014 with the 6.4. I run regular all the time. The premium is just a recommendation.

I purchased a 2016 ram 2500 6.4 brand new during black Friday clearance sales when the 17's were coming out. It has never seen anything but regular and no where on the truck does it say anything about premium. I two an 11k 5th wheel and could not be happier. I have seen no issues and had no problems.

And I LOVE that reply! There was actually a note of the window sticker that said premium fuel. It did not give any other info. We take delivery Wednesday so I can check out owners manual too. Thanks for the reply.

I just got mine 3 weeks ago as I special ordered it. Only 700 miles on it and use nothing but regular gas. Towing tt at 62 got 11mpg better than my 6.0 Chevy I traded. Later RJD

I read your earlier posts when you were considering the Ram. Very cool looking truck! Ours will be white. We are considering stripping to match the Windjammer. Thanks for the fuel info. Guess this time the sales rep was right.

I just bought a 2018 2500 6.4 4.10 gears. Manual says 89 octane recommended. I use reg when not towing and 89 when towing. Tows my 9300 lb 5er very well. 9.5-10 mpg average. No where does it say anything about premium.

I upgraded from a 2016 ram rebel. Truck had plenty of power, 3.92 gears just no payload. Mines a 2018 ram 2500 6.4 with 4.10 gears. Pulls great. I run 87 octane. When trailering I use tow haul mode. It locks out 6th gear. Tranny does a great job down shifting slowing the load when coming to a stop. I'm getting 7-9mpg towing, 13-15 not. Click image for larger version

Like others have stated, there is no mention of premium gas needed.

Nothing mentioned either about how much my 2500 6.4 4.10 loves gas stations. It's never passed one it didn't want to enter.

My 17 3500 6.4L manual says 89 is recommended. I've run both 87 and 89 with no real difference. However, I do try to run 89 when towing as the Ram experts say the computer has a sensor that will retard timing (and power) with 87 to avoid detonation. Click image for larger version
