RAM 6.4l thought & comments

Just bought a new truck.

I'd like to hear from fellow RAM 6.4l owners. The 5th wheel in my signature weighs in about 11,000 lbs when loaded. We rarely tow in any mountain terrain. Truck has 3.73 gears. Any tips, do's, don'ts, etc.
With my old truck (Silverado short box)..I never required a slider hitch..will I need one with the Ram?

I don't know about 5th wheel slider. I have a Ram 6.4 and am pleased with it. I tow a TH at 18,500 GCW. If you are used to a gasser you won't be disappointed.

Would like to hear as well. Looking to upgrade from my '08 1500 5.7 and this 6.4 is one I'm looking at. I do tow in the mountains, but not pulling a large 5er. 6000# TT. 3.5 EB is the other one I'm considering. Anyone pulling their rig in the rockies with the 6.4?

I have a 2015 Ram 2500 with the 6.4L Hemi, 4.10 rear axle ratio and 20" tires (from the factory). I pull a Hemisphere 5th wheel (7800 lbs empty) with no problems. Sometimes I it feels like the Hemi is "chomping at the bit" to use the 410 horses! I think you will find this truck will not disappoint. I have a gooseneck adapter so my truck bed has plenty of room.

I just bought one last week as well. Unfortunately I won't be able to see how it hauls until the first week of April. I can't wait to try it out. Heading from Michigan to Tennessee.

I have a 2015 Ram 2500 Power Wagon with 6.4/Hemi and 4.10 gears.Only tow a 255 Tracer Air but it does it with no problem even through mountains.

I have had a Dodge 2000 and now a 2012 both diesels. I tow a 5th wheel that weighs 13,800lbs loaded. I use common sense and keep my speed at 60 mph and never try to pull it hard up the hills. I average 13.9 mpg. Wife and I travel extensively out-of-state and we have made it from coast to coast. Love the Dodge diesel. No problems. I also have a slider in the short bed but have not used it.

I have a 2014 2500 Heavy Duty Laramie 6.4L Hemi with 3.73 gear ratio, 6ft bed and slider hitch. I tow a Crusader 295RST fiver with the same all up weight as you (approx 11,000lbs) and it tows like a dream.
As we're retired we're never in a rush to get anywhere so I tow at a steady 55-60mph on the highway and I get 10-11mpg.
If I had one issue, it is with the truck height, which makes the Crusader slightly nose high when towing, but I checked this out with the dealer to see if it was worth adjusting the king pin and hitch, but they said not to bother.
With the long bed and the slider, we've had no issues squeezing into some tight spaces.

To answer your sliding hitch question, it depends on the cab of the RAM. If its a Crew or Mega cab with a 6.5' bed then YES you will need a slider. If the Signature 5th wheel you have is a Flagstaff or Rockwood Signature with the Reese Sidewinder pinbox, no you will not need it for the Crew, but I think you will for the Mega as the bed is only 5'7". I too am looking at trading my 1500 in for a 2500, but can't seem to get these damn dealers to negotiate.

Pulling a 2016 Sabre 33CKTS weighing at 10,600 unloaded with a 2015 F250 6.2 L engine short bed with a slider hitch. Found myself having trouble keeping the speed under 70. I do try to keep the speed between 60 to 65 in flat and hilly areas. So far so good. Have yet to tackle the mountain regions.

I have a 2014 Ram Megacab 2500 with a Cummins Diesel. I did buy a PullRite Superglide and have had no problems towing my CedarCreek 38CK which has a gross weight of just over 16,000. I traveled from CT to SD and back and it towed effortlessly. I was traveling average speeds of 65 mph and I averaged 11.9 mpg over the course of the trip towing.

We have the 6.4l hemi with 3.73 4 door, short bed Ram. We have been pulling the 8284ws Rockwood with no issues. Absolutely love the truck. It has the towing package.

We have a 2013.2500 5.7 Hemi mega cab short bed and have hauled 30ft Rockwood dry weight 7000# all over the western US including the western and eastern Sierra and rocky mountains and had no problem pulling 60-70 mph very happy with ram. I feel if your towing with either a 2500 or 3500 with a 6.4 which has more power than the 5.7 gasser or diesel you'll be very happy.

We love our Ram with the 6.4 and 3.73. We have a light trailer, but we didn't notice it behind us when we were in RMNP last year.

Have the same truck with the same gears. Pull 7k loaded and it does well. Way better than my previous 1/2 ton hemi 5.7. Gas mpg is what you would expect a gas engine while towing...unloaded I avg 17 on the highway and 12-13 around town. I have documented my experience towing with this platform here just search for 6.4 hemi in the search box for more details.
