This is kind of odd to me. I'm shopping for a 2500 Ram right now and most I've seen have the 3.42 ratio. However, I went to a different dealer yesterday and all of them were 3.73. Since this will be my daily driver, I am wanting the 3.42... for what little fuel savings that will be... And... why no CD players? Yeah, I'm old school, and Ram has them, but they are like hen's teeth... ie. hard to find.

You found some 2500 Ram's with the 3.73 gears. Some people would go nutz over that. I didn't think Ram put those gears in the 2500. Just the 3500's. Yeah I was surprised my truck didn't have a CD player in it as well, but then I never use them anyway since I like the Sat radio , and have so since 2005.

The sticker on the 2500 say 3.73 but under the added options under the Cummins Diesel option, it lists it as a 3.42. The salesmen probably looked at the left side if the window sticker. I had several that told me the same thing.

Yeah, that's what my sticker says. 3.73 gears but in the option's it says I paid for the 3.42. Ha Ha. I would have liked not to have that option. The bottom line is the 3.42 gears work just fine. I pleased with in anyway, and that's all that matters.

New vehicle stickers are very misleading. The left side is the base model truck as defined by the 2500 or 3500 series description, likely with a gas engine, six speed auto, 3.73 gears. Then the right side adds things on under it's own table, Diesel option group with a sub table, oil cooler, Asin trans, 3.42 gears, etc.

Honestly I don't like that because the left side doesn't mean a thing compared to the right. If a different engine, gearing, trans, etc. will be listed in the options then don't advertise it on the left side. It's meant to protect you, so that you know exactly what was changed from base. Salesmen use it as a selling tool knowing that those that tow would find 3.73 gears desirable.

And in case you're wondering why a 3.73 or higher gear isn't offered, mainly it's because the OEM would need to certify that emissions package again for that gear ratio and final RPM number. One gear, maybe one option, reduces costs in part inventory and emissions certification.

I just got back from a 10k trip pulling my Platinum 365VTSB. My truck is a 2013 Ram 2500 6.7 cummins, 6 speed automatic trans, and 3.42 gears. The truck pulled fine for the most part there were times when I wished I had 3.73's especially when I was bucking a 25-30mph head wind. Average mpg was 10mpg, best was 12.30 mpg, worse 7.5mpg that was when I bucking the big head winds. If I was ordering a new truck I believe I would be seriously looking at the 3.73 gears.

It will have to be a 3500 then. They don't put the 3.42's in the 3/4 ton Rams with diesel engines.

We have the CD player but we also have the option of using a ScanDisk. I formatted a 64 gig card and downloaded all my music on the card. The OEM says it only supports a 32 gig but format the 64 and you can get it to work. With 64 gig of music. I find the CD player up there with the cassette player of yesteryear. But nothing can replace 8 track tapes. Lol.

OP, might want to review the towing data of the Duramax with the factory 3.73:1 Locker rear. A 3.73:1 Rear has been the best compromise of power and economy for years, that hasn't changed.
Only reason to put a 3.42 or 3.55 in the rear is to squeeze the truck for fuel ecomomy at the expense of pulling power.

FYI: The Duramax (and Ford) have absolutely spanked the Dodge the last several years in the "Rocky Mountain Tow Challenge".
Dodge puts up big talk of power but has lost miserably in the real world challenge. The first challenge, the Dodge was several MINUTES behind the Duramax and Powerstroke trucks up the mountain pass, all were loaded equally heavily....and Dodge lost miserably.

Dodge needs to up their game with the >CUMMINS< (Not Cummings) Diesel badly.

Just food for thought.
