You asked for real world experience. I have a 2014 Ram Ecodiesel with 30,000 miles. Laramie, quad-cab 4X4, with 3.92 gears. As others have stated, payload is very low (mine is 1,200 pounds on the yellow door sticker). TT is a Rockwood 2604WS that weighs 6,120 ready to go camping and 800 pounds tongue weight. CAT scale results show I'm 80 pounds over the payload with me, DW and dog and 90 pounds over the GVWR. I don't like exceeding any ratings, but I only tow in NY state and keep speeds at or below the limit. I would not like to tow a trailer any bigger or heavier than the one I have, so any upgrade for me (and my comfort level) will require a 2500. BTW, the little 3.0 liter diesel handles towing with ease. I think a lot of credit goes to the 8 speed transmission that always seems to be in the right gear. Engine does not rev above about 3,000 on the steepest grades and normally stays quietly between 22-2600 RPM in tow-haul. Typical fuel mileage is 13-15 when towing the Rockwood.
