I hope any new truck shoppers regardless of make, model, engine configuration are smart enough to negotiate a deal off the he MSRP just like they would when buying an RV not saying you going to get 30% off but deals are out there.

Just because the diesel option is on average an extra 9K on a new truck doesn't mean everyone pays for it.

62K truck with diesel bought for 48K after making a deal versus Joe Blow who walks in and buys a MSRP 50K gasser truck for 45K and thinks he is getting a good deal.

I was in a similar situation a few months back. I wanted to upgrade my Ram 1500 to a 2500 but I was torn on the Cummins vs 6.4L. Apparently the Cummins must not be the hot seller it used to be because dealers were drastically discounting them, the 6.4 trucks were also discounted but not quite a much. So the difference between the Cummins and 6.4 was only maybe $4k so I really had to weigh what would work best for me. I opted for the 6.4 because of the type of driving I do, how much I actually tow and how many miles I actually drive a truck a year. For me, the 6.4 made more sense. If these new emissions diesels were like the diesels of old, I would have gotten the Cummins but those days are gone unfortunately. If I could have gotten the 2018 Ram with the reliability and trouble free driving that my 96 Cummins was, it would have been a no brainer.

nice to hear that the owners of a 2500 are happy with the rear coil spring set up. I was nut sure what the towing performance would be but from what I am reading the coil spring set up is a great way to go

For one almost all are 4 w drive which I do not need and most all are diesels plus then they load them up with all kinds of options that I don't need. So I order what I want and the cost is about 4000 cheaper than on the lot. Later RJD

So you're ordering a 2wd? What trim package do you get? And you're right, you don't see many 2wd trucks.

It's also difficult to find 4:10 ratios on the lot, 3:73's are the norm most places. Those gears work fine MOSTLY, however whoever decided The Tranny gear ratios should be hung.. There is a HUGE gap between 1st and second and the truck just falls on its face if your towing overly heavy.

I bought a Ram off the lot in December, it has 4.10's. Yes they're rare but they can be found. I knew I wanted the 4.10's so I hunted and found a few local dealers that sprung for the option.

Yea I'm sure they are there if you look hard enough, I'm guessing probably 1 4:10 for every 5 or 6 3:73 trucks out there. And 3:73 sounds fine, and in most cases it is.. But this truck with 3:73 actually seems to be geared higher than my f 150 that had 3:31's in it. IMO this truck shouldn't even be sold with 3:73's

I'm also looking at a used Ram. Is there a site I can put in the VIN and see what transmission and options it has. The truck has the Cummins High Output badge. Does that automatically mean it has a Aisin?

Is it a 3500? If so, they only come with the Aisin.

That did give a lot of specs but did not indicate if it was a high output engine or which transmission it has.

From everything I have read, the only way you get the 6.7 HO engine is when it is mated to the Aisin transmission.

I just found another website that gave me the build sheet for the truck. It does list it as having a 6.7L but with a 68rfe transmission and 3.73 gear. It also lists the high output badge. This is a 2012 truck so maybe you could get the high output without the Aisin back then.

From my understanding, Ram has stopped taking orders for 2018 HD trucks, 2500 and 3500. As reported on the Dodge Diesel Forum.

To the OP, the coil rear suspension on the 2500 is solid. I think the GVW on the 5.7 is 9,000 lbs and it increases to 10,000 lbs on the 6.4 and 6.7 CTD. Check the door sticker. If you do upgrade to a 2500 remember to get a 2.5 inch shank for the WDH. Do not use the sleeve. It is never talked about, but a heavier TV adds to the stability of the tow. Don't be afraid to add some firewood in the box, in front of the rear axle.
