Recommendation/Advice on WDH

Hi All,

So I've read through pages and pages of posts regarding WDH's. Have decided on Equal-i-zer brand. Should I get the 10,000lb or 12,000lb version. I am getting ready to buy a 2012 Fuzion 260 Toy Hauler.
Hauler weighs 6735 empty, 1130lb tongue weight and 4555lbs carry capacity. I'll be pulling with a 2011 F150 Ecoboost.

I'm thinking the 12,000lb version is what I need...any other recommendations??

First thing, and hate to say this, is a bigger truck. Tongue weight when loaded is going to hit 1500 pounds or more. No WD hitch is going to handle that on a 1/2 ton truck. Have you run ALL the numbers, and made sure your truck will handle this? The gross weight on that camper is about 11,500. Now if that is the max on your truck, you have to leave the wife, children, dog, and the firewood at home.

BUGGER!..really, a bigger truck?...I thought this truck would handle it. THE GCWR is 15,000lbs and max TOW is 9800lbs. I know the toy hauler can carry more than I can tow...but never planned on maxing it out. Dang...don't tell back to the drawing board...spent the last 2mths looking for a toy hauler and thought i had it!

The magic number is GCVWR. That is the combined weight of the truck and camper. (Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Ratio). Now, whatever the truck weighs, subtract that from the 15,000 pounds rating, and you get your max camper weight. (to an extent). There again, in order to run max numbers, you won't have anything in the truck, not wife, kids, or dog, or firewood.

Don't know the specs on your truck, but a 2 wheel drive, around 5200~5500 or so, a 4x4, over 6000. That leaves about 9000 for a camper MAYBE. The camper you picked will be at 7000 or more with options. Add another several hundred for gadgets, clothes, food, beer, and then 1000 for toys in the back, and you are at 9000 for the camper. And while it may pull it, you won't like the gas mileage. (no I don't have one, but that V6 is going to work). You're also going to kick the tongue weight to around 1500 pounds, may be more than rear axle wants on your truck, and I know the springs won't take it. I have a toy hauler with 1000 pound tongue weight, and a 1/2 ton Ford. I was going to move it across the yard one day without the WD hitch. That didn't work.

Now really, I'm not trying to rain on your parade, and all of these numbers are guesses and estimates.

The toy-hauler probably won't get to 1500 lbs TW, since more weight goes behind the axles than in a non-toy-hauler.
But I still say the F150 would be getting kicked pretty hard. At best, right at the max ratings. And that's if you get the MAX tow package and highest gear ratios.

Thanks for the replies...I listened and decided not to buy the toy hauler...as has been stated so close to the max for the truck. I did however pick up a 2010 Dutchmen 26B....will be bringing it home tomorrow. Thanks, Phil
