No. your home state rules apply to licence class or vehicle while visiting Ontario. Same goes for us in the USA. Except double towing. That is enforced.

I doubt it but I can't confirm for cetain. I can't find anything about US registered vehicles but vehicles registered in other provinces are exempt from the rules, so it only makes sense that you would be exempt, too.

I have to repeat that this only matters if you get pulled over by the police or the MTO for an inspection and weighing. Pulling your trailer with a RAM 3500 DRW, IMO you really don't need to be concerned.

MHs are exempt and I'm not aware of any law requiring the trailer to be inspected regularly although the police and MTO would probably have the right to demand a safety inspection with reasonable cause.

The inspection law I'm talking about here only applies to the pickup truck itself, not the trailer you're towing. Legally, for Ontario-registered pickups, the weight of your trailer has to be factored into the Registered Gross Weight (RGW) of your truck. You can choose not to do so at your risk....the risk being the chance you'll be pulled over by the police or MTO to enforce the law which is probably a low risk but not rare.

I just got my license sticker renewal invoice from MTO. The dealer registered my F250 with a RGW of 6811 kg to account for the weight of my TT, and the annual plate renewal fee is $354 vs. $120 if they had registered it just for the truck's GVWR. And that doesn't include the cost of an inspection! I'm not very happy with the dealer right now.

What happens when you are not towing the trailer or sell it? Your dealer is wrong. I asked local licence off and never add weight of a removable trailer.

I know. It sounds stupid, but my dealer and I both got the same answer. I've done more searching online and found a forum for the Highway Traffic Act that's frequented by MTO enforcement officers. They also repeat what I and my dealer were told by officers at a weigh scale. See this thread:

Annual Vehicle Inspection Sticker : General Talk

Unfortunately, this is going to cost me a lot more than I thought at $234 + inspection costs, every year, just to have a more capable TV.

It can get confusing especially since alot of people "know" the laws. It's fun if your on facebook with a group of young people. The lack of knowledge and "I was told by my fathers friends wifes sister that this is needed" is fun to go through.

I have gone through this on the enclosed trailer side of things because a couple of years ago I was pulled over by enforcement to check things and educate me with a warning letter. The officer also stated at that time pickups with trailers (non rv) were the new target as many are not properly registered or inspected.

Now with my new truck I can't play the 9900lbs game as it's GVWR is higher than that. Needs a sticker no matter what on the truck but I knew that going in. Lots of issues are caused by the poor people at the licence bureau not being informed of updates to laws and regs. They have changed the renewal pages now to easily allow you to check off the personal cvor exempt box unlike 2 years ago. When I had an issue I was able to get in touch with someone from enforcement who helped out alot.

If someone is concerned and you have a scale in your area. Stop in when they are open. I have found the majority are ok and will help you out.

Well, I called a different weigh scale this afternoon and talked to a very helpful enforcement officer. He said that I do indeed have to have an annual inspection on the F250 because of the combined weight of the pickup and TT. If I was never going to tow a trailer the RGW would be based solely on the weight of the truck and I'd be well under the limit.

Here's a summary of the regulations:

CVOR, Daily Inspections and Daily Log Books
If a personal-use truck weighs over 6000 kg, you are subject to the requirement for a CVOR, daily inspections and daily log book. So most 3/4 ton and 1 ton pickups that aren't used for commercial purposes should be exempt from those requirements.

Annual Inspections
If the truck (regardless of personal-use) weighs over 4500 kg OR you tow a trailer that weighs over 2800 kg, you have to register the truck with a RGW to account for both truck and trailer, AND you are subject to the requirement for annual inspections on the truck. Note that the weight is measured on the axles so the tongue/pin weight of your trailer is accounted for in the truck weight. Given this, having a 5er may be an advantage since more weight is on the pin. You do not need an annual inspection on a RV camper trailer.

If you don't believe me, here is a link to phone numbers at Canadian weigh scales. Scroll down to the scales in Ontario and call you nearest MTO scale yourself and ask.

Again, for out-of province and US registered vehicles, your home province/state rules will likely apply, so don't let this scare you from visiting Ontario.

Which would be your truck's GVWR on the door sticker, correct? I think that's what mine says.

It should also have "COM" on the top of your ownership which signifies it's registered as a commercial vehicle.

Registering a 3/4 Ton Pickup in Ontario

There are two levels to the com registration. When the dealership registered my RAM 1500 they registered it as being used as a commercial vehicle. This was going to cost me a lot more money when I went to renew. They changed it to being used as a pleasure vehicle and I pay the same as a car. My plates green slip still says com at the top.
