while that is an interesting point, the reality is that regular cab pickups have become rare already because no one wants one. Outside of the small pickups (and Ford does not even bother to sell those anymore) I would imagine they comprise less than 10% or non-commercial sales.
There was a guy locally who had a regular cab Dodge 3500 DRW diesel loaded for sale for 20K under sticker brand new. for months on end. tells you how much demand is for those...

That's our stupid government at work. So does that mean all pickups will become larger now because their required MPG is based on their footprint?!?!

Meh. there is a credible argument there for mpg targets driving the vehicle size, but the real story is market demand.
People use trucks like they used to use SUV's, then minivans before suv's and station wagons before that. Hard to carry the fam in a reg cab, hence so many models being sold in "crew cab" configuration.
Equally telling of how theses particular models are being used is that the lions share of these crew cabs are going out the door with the short box option.
Making a reg cab these days is missing the meat of the market share in light truck sales....and that's the domestic mall crawler market.

I think at some point you'll see a trend toward mid size pickups, like the Tacoma. GM has one the on the way. I'm assuming they have done their market studies. Think about it, if your not buying a PU for towng but, you need one out in the suburbs as an everyday driver your probably not going to spend $45, 000 and up, many as much as $60, 000 +. A nice midsize with decent MPGS. might be the ticket... Just me.

I would hardly call a Tocoma a mid sized pickup? I once had a 2001 model and couldn't get rid of it fast enough. I think it had 2 rats running for power.

This is what I thought would happen mid-90's when I first drove a Dakota crew cab. Easier to park, still decent sized bed, good sized interior, and towed most of what a 1/2 ton could. Then Toyota introduced the Tundra which was sized just like a Dakota (I remember an article referring to them as 7/8 of a 1/2 ton, or 7/16 of a ton).
Then two things happened, most people decided if they were going to get an almost 1/2 ton, they would just get a 1/2 ton. Toyota realized their mistake, re-designed the Tundra into a real 1/2 ton (actually a little bigger than some competition) and started selling a lot of them.
Truth is the market has shown repeatedly that there is no mass appeal to the mid-size pickup segment.

Honda had cancelled the Ridgeline, but at the last minute, called it back. As far as I know, there are no plans to cancel it again, but I've yet to see any new tooling for a redesign, which I'm sure they would do. The Civic got a complete overhaul, and was being retooled before the first models rolled off the line because of negative reviews. I generally work on tooling that is 1-3yrs model yrs out. Although most GM, Ford, Chrysler tooling is built out of country.

If it comes in with specs like the original Holden it should be ok. Payload in Australia is 3300lbs
here is the aussie shoot out.
