Removing fifth wheel

Hello.... when removing the 5th wheel hitch from the bed of the truck is it ok to leave it hanging on the king pin? Also any idea how to secure it in the truck bed to prevent theft? Thanks in advance.......

The Pullrite hitch manual says not to leave it hanging on the hitch pin.

Having said that; the darn thing weighs too much for me to get it into and out of the bed by myself. For the last 3 years I have used the camper as a crane to get the hitch out of the bed and put it back in. Of course that leaves the hitch on the king pin. I lube it up real good with 3 in 1 oil on the head and lithium grease on the ways; then bag it in plastic for the winter till we head south.

Having it in the air makes it easy to clean and lube prior to re-installation.

The hitch pins have holes in the ends for a cotter key; but could be replaced with a locking wire (like a gun lock).

Theft of a hitch is pretty rare I think. However, I do also have a bed cover. Mine folds 4 times so I don't have to remove it when I hook up the 5er. Just fold it a couple of times and hook up and go. Fold it back down at the destination and I'm good.

I have also hung my hitch on my kingpin, but I found it was so much harder to get back in the truck...mainly to line up the stupid tabs to the rails. I just leave it in the truck almost all the time now. Only remove it when I have to haul something.

Times Two. I just use a big pry bar to slide it back and forth till the pins go in. I leave mine in the bed until I need it free also. Once its out it stays out till I need it in again.
