Rockwood 8289ws fifth wheel -- any advice on what kind of truck to buy ?

Hi All,

We just put a deposit on a Rockwood 8289ws Ultralite. We plan to full-time in it for the next year or two and travel the country.

This is our first fifth-wheel, and we're new to the world of pickup trucks and towing.

I've been doing some research, but would greatly appreciate any advice on what kind of truck we should buy to tow it with.

According to Rockwood :

Dry Hitch Weight 1,524 lb.
Unloaded Vehicle Weight 7,793 lb.
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) 9,350 lb.
Cargo Carrying Capacity 1,557 lb.

The 8289ws is supposedly "half-ton towable" (if you get the right half-ton of course).

We are planning to spend $20K to $30K on a used truck. Thinking 2007 to 2010.

If it was you, and you had a $30K budget, what make/model/year/engine would you go with ?

Assuming we go with a Ford, would an F-150 offer a far more comfortable ride than an F250 ? Will an F-150 be much easier to maneuver when we use it on its own ?

Re-sale value is important to us, is it much better for F-250 than F-150, or diesel vs gas engine ?

Anyone out there who tows an 8289ws (or similar) with a 1/2 or 3/4 truck, and have any words of advice for us as we consider which truck to buy ?

We're planning to visit a few dealers this weekend, and have a look at some trucks, but not sure the dealers will be as helpful as folks on this board.

Thanks very much for any advice.

The pin weight on that camper loaded will be in the neighhood of 1800 lbs...that puts it outside the payload that a half ton can carry. The exception would be the new (or 2011) F150's with the max payload package (GVWR 8200 lbs). There may be some used F150 HD's, but they're very rare.

If you're planning on lots of towing when full-timing, you may want to consider a diesel 250/2500 series truck with superior towing fuel mileage. Your budget limit may be a little limiting on a late model diesel. You can opt for a gas 250/2500 series truck, but towing and non-towing fuel mileage aren't wonderful.

BTW, welcome to the froums.

Dave

I have the same model, I agree with Dave. My tow veh. is a F250 6.0 diesel, 2004. I live in Virginia and now we are visiting the Grand Canyon. I have not had any problems pulling the 5er. We are at about 7000' elevation now. I have been getting about 12 miles to the gal, can cruise all day at 60 or 65. Your unit will come with a Reese Sidewinder, so you should get a short bed. I wouldn't be looking at anything less then 3/4 ton for pulling this unit, no matter what the sales people tell you. Also a note I have not had any problems with my axle or tires. I did add the recommended grease it was a little low from the dealer. My axles and tires have been running at between 77 and 107 degrees and its 95 daily. We are still on our trip to Oregon and then back to Virginia. Let me tell you this is a great unit and very dependable so far. I'm very pleased with FR, and welcome to the family.

Buy a F-250 or equal

For your size of 5Th wheel, you should buy a F-250 or equal for towing. I tow with a F-150 8285WS which is smaller than your choice of RV. You will not be happy with anything in the F-150 range for a good T/V and the RV you have chosen.
