same here! I have a programmer on my 2004 F250 Diesel,so I can cheat a bit with digital gauges displaying my Trans Temp, Egt Exhaust Gas Temp, engine temp ect....
Never use the cruise control while towing.

Not in this lifetime. I agree they diesels pull like crazy, I just don't like the noise or smell. New ones are better, but, I'm not spending that kind of money to have it sit 7 months of the year.

I use cruise and watch the tach half-heartedly. I'm too truck-stupid to understand what it and the other gauges are telling me. Nothing varies a whole lot, so I stick with that.

If I was you I would shift the truck on your own it will save your tranny. I do this now with my tundra and I did it with my old Titan. When your approaching a hill down shift so the tranny will lock in that one gear until you get to the top then shift it back up. It will be much easier on you and the truck.

My truck has the smaller V8. It's actually the old reliable 327 CI in disguise!
I run in 3rd not D and so at 65 MPH I'm tacking right at 2900 RPM.
If I absolutely have to pass someone and really kick it, it drops to 2nd
and screams at about 5K
But it will pull like crazy like that.
Also keep in mind the 327 is a short stroke high rev engine by design.
I run Mobile 1 and plan on driving it many more years

I do watch the tach but just much I (living in hilly area) pay attention to when the truck shifts & is going to shift (Yes its automatic) & deal with it accordingly...........
When I taught the boys to drive 5 speeds they would always ask when do I shift & my response was the car will tell you............. of course I kind of am bad about sink or swim..... their first lesson was I took them to the church parking lot facing uphill stopped got out had them get in & learn right off stopped uphill with a manual clutch (No not a hydraulic clutch) To take off .... .... both got it right off (that day).......Still have the Mustang & yes it has the original clutch.... One of the boys still drives a stick the other would but his wife can't .............
Back to the OPs question about the tach watching like I was saying I do.... but I pay more attention to what the truck is telling me........... & I do not use the cruise towing takes the fun out of driving

I use the tach when climbing passes. Headed to the coast is a 1600 foot pass and going east is 4800, so it's a good pull. On our current Suburban (6 speed with 3.42 rear) will max out at 3000 RPM in third gear at about 50mph. If I shift down to 2nd it'll scream to about 4800. On our old 2003 suburban(4 speed) I could do the passes in 2nd at 55mph at about 3200 rpm. Still trying to find that sweet spot.

I also watch the tach as well as my boost and EGTs. Hills at 60, 2700 and flats, 1900. Below 1500, I get little boost, and of course, the Jeep will downshift.

Always! Especially when climbing the east side of the Coquihalla when the engine oil temp is up around 120 degrees and the tranny temp is pushing 90 plus degrees C.

X2....my boost gauge is my econo minder, the lower, the better I get, execpt when it hits 40PSI then I am gone, I try not lug the engine up big hills and she like 18-2000k RPM, but with the 6 speed and tap shift I can keep any gear I want. but with close to 575 rear wheel HP it pulls like crazy
