Safety chain location

TO CLARIFY THIS PHOTO IS NOT MY SETUP, COPIED FROM THE INTERWEB! I just had to replace the shank on my Husky centerline due to my new truck being 10" taller than my old one. Now that I have done that my chains are only long enough to go over the top of the hitch head instead of under like this photo. My question is that acceptable or should I shop for longer chains?Click image for larger version

I think under is the universally approved method, presumably to "catch" the failed hitch as it drops.
You need longer chains if you need to drape them over the top.
I could be wrong, someone with more knowledge than me will no doubt have more information.
You could use some of those threaded link extenders like shown in the photo to give you a bit more slack.

Shop for longer chains and do it right, they are not that expensive.
