Safety Chains

I upgraded to a GMC 2500 which now has the 2 1/2 " hitch receiver. The hooks on the safety chain on the Mini Lite do not fit in the hole on the receiver. Those of you that have this new hitch receiver, how are you connecting your safety chains?

I put larger hooks on. I never did this... But did you try the holes right by the spare? Someone said they tried this and it worked with stock hooks.. I needed longer chains still so not the end of the world. I used larger snap hooks on the rear most holes.

I put quick links like those in post 2 in holes on my 2015 2500HD hitch, then hooked the original snap hooks of the safety chains onto the quick links. It takes two links per side, though, because by the time you go through the hitch "hole" you still don't ave room for the snap hook, but you do have room for a second quick link. the safety chain hooks into quick link #2.

Quick links are not dot approved for that application. It probably doesnt matter on a camper, unless you have to scale and get hit with an inspection. Then you will pay a heftey fine and wont move untill they are changed.I know 2 people that barrel race horses and have thir name on the truck/trailer,which makes them*commercial and requires a dot number. One got busted in Iowa, the other in Nebraska.

edit) an anchor shackel IS dot approved.

Quick links will not work as they will not open wide enough to fit the hitch. I fabricated a 1/4" plate that bolts to the under side of the hitch and it turns back a couple inches. Bolted on with 2- 7/16" grade 8 bolts.

I am having the same issue. I posted my problem in the towing sub section here a few weeks ago. There were some good suggestions but I haven't settled on my own solution yet. If you do please post it.

I just opened up the hook a bit with a little heat did not take much it's a very poor design though.

Same problem here, I've been using the side holes of the hitch instead but it's not the best solution. I'm going to buy bigger hooks and change them, I don't trust those little quick link things. I stopped at a truck store and tried a huge d ring, it fit through the hitch hole, but it wouldn't allow the camper hook to close either.

Here's a little more fun on this topic. I went to the local trailer place this morning and saw these on the shelf. The guy let me check one and they fit and close on my hitch! I stop at the camper so I can switch them out, and see that the ones that came on the camper are also 5/16", but they do not close. So, best thing to do is make sure you go somewhere that you can try one, don't go by size alone.

Here is even more fun.Does anyone know what the purpose of the little spring loaded clip is? I'll give you a hint,it is NOT to keep things from slipping out of the hook. Come on,all you iron workers, welders and riggers, step up!

Not a clue, I generally end up bending them to the point I remove them.

you can google anything...

OHSA 29 CFR Part 1926, Safety and Health Regulations for Construction, at 29 CFR §1926.753(d)(2)(ii) (in specified situations, "Hooks with self-closing safety latches or their equivalent shall be used to prevent components from slipping out of the hook...").

What is your explanation trbomax?

OK, times up. They are there so that the rigger/crane operator knows if the hook has been overloaded and deformed,as in opening up.If the hook opens up enough to allow the "retainer
"as it is sometimes called to open past the end of the hook or even move close to it,the hook has been overloaded and must be disgarded. This from my son who is a special project super at a nuc plant. He also has every certification for welding any metal with x-ray inspection, was a crane operator/rigger,all in union shops.

No that's not actually it. But if the hook does spread to that point yes it must be replaced. But the latch is not there for that reason.

You are mostly correct. But the latch is not required in all industry applications, nuclear and lifting personal yes. Construction yes they are required.
