Scale help

Ok, I KNOW there are smarter people out there than me. I'm hoping someone can help me determine if my set-up is good or not. Went to the scales this morning, here are the tickets:

In case you can't read my writing... All are with a full fuel tank, trailer loaded as if headed on the road, a few things in the bed of the truck, but only me, not the family in the truck.

#1 is with no weight distribution bars hooked up (But I put them in the bed of the truck, if that matters)

#2 is with the bars hooked up, on the 7th chain link

#3 is obviously with no trailer but the truck still loaded up and the bars in the bed.

Please help me determine if I am set up right.

Ok, if it matters, it's a 2006 F150 4x4 supercrew, short bed, 3.73 rear, 5.4L engine.

Also, how can I calculate the tongue weight, or do I need a different measurement?

Thanks folks!

Joe

If I calculated correct your tongue weight is 734 lbs, your only shy 80 pounds on the front with w/d, looks good to me.

Thanks! How did you come up with that? What do you mean by 80 pounds shy?

Your front tire empty weight was 3440 with trailer and w/d is 3360 gives you difference of 80 lbs. You have recovered all but 80 pounds with the trailer and w/d hooked up.

Without w/d you lost 220 lbs

You can use this worksheet to check your axles weights. I would check it so you know for sure.

Scale help

The tongue weight is 520 lbs. You take the total truck weight without WDH from ticket 1 and subtract the truck weight from ticket 3. Your trailer weight is 4900 which is the gross weight from ticket 1 minus ticket 3. You tongue weight percentage is 10.6. Your set up looks good, but a little higher tongue weight would make it better.

Fat fingered the calculator there . 740 TW (15.1%)

EDIT: Actually, I see what happened. You have to use rear axle without WD, not with for actual TW. Now...which method is better for real world scenarios while using WDH I'm not sure.

I got the 520 number, how are you coming up with 740?

Someone may jump in here and correct me. Actual TW should be the difference on the rear axles between no trailer hooked up and trailer hooked up with no bars attached. That would be the same as weighing the tongue by itself. The bars will transfer that weight so it wouldn't be accurate. It may be more accurate for looking at TW% though.

If I'm missing this, somebody will straighten me out!

Read my post and it explains how to calculate tongue weight.

I understand that but, would that be the most accurate way to do so? I'm guessing it would probably be more practical to use the weights with WDH connected as it would factor in to remaining payload and TW% while actually towing. It just wouldn't give you the actual TW as it sits disconnected.

Scale help

It is the only accurate way. It is no different than calculating pin weight of a fifth wheel. Get the truck weight. Drop the fifth wheel on and get the truck weight. You need to consider weight added to both axles, not just the rear axle. It is typical for 100-200 lbs to be added to front axle and the rest the rear axle. The sum total of weight added is the pin weight. It is the same with a travel trailer but it works in reverse. Get the truck weight. Drop the trailer on with no WDH hooked up so none of the tongue weight is shifted to the trailer axles. Now the sum total of the axle changes is the tongue weight, but the front axle change is negative. Say the front axle is -200 and the rear axle is +700. 500 lb tongue weight. The 200 lb weight shifted from the front to rear forced by dropping the trailer on the truck is not tongue weight, as it came from the truck and not from the trailer.

The actual tongue weight is what is used in the 10-15 percent. 12-13 is optimal.

Makes sense. Now...since, in this example, we couldn't get zero weight transfer to the trailer axles, would I be correct in stating that the trailer axles plus the WDH TW resulted in a 80 lb gain on the total trailer weight? That makes the TW% slightly less...I think about 10.6%. I never really thought about WD affecting balance like that.

The WDH will transfer some weight back to the trailer axles, but not being a physics professor I can't answer anything beyond that.
