Setting Tow Settings in DIC

My Ford F350 in the DIC "Driver Information Center" if you scroll down to "Settings" then to "Driver Assist" there two settings for towing. The first one sets up "Trailer Braking" has three settings Light - Medium - High that affects trailer brakes and should be set to what you are towing. Mine was set to light and wouldn't lockup the trailer tires till I moved highest setting. Second one is "Trailer Sway Control" mine defaulted to off and set this the way you want it. Some people like on and other off so what floats your boat.

I'm not sure if all trucks have those settings but if does they need to be set.

I never knew those settings existed. I just checked mine and it was set on light. I bumped it up to medium to see what happens next time I tow.

I think a lot of people don't know they exist, not even the dealer I bought my truck from. Did you check trailer sway was on of off? Mine was off but mine sat on the lot and who knows what settings were changed. If you bumped it be sure to check your trailer brakes on the next outing.

Hey CW. Based on all the responses on the other thread, there are a lot of guys that aren't aware of these settings. I was one of them. Your description is accurate.
Thanks for the info. You've probably helped several guys...plus whoever they help.

Thanks

Did you have a setting for "Trailer Sway" and was it on or off? Mine was off when I brought mine home. From what I understand that Trailer Sway and Traction Control are two different settings.

On 'high' but what number in the range did you find the sweet spot?

My impression is that depends on the weight of you 5er but mine falls between 7 and 8 most of the time. My new 5er weights in at 14,100 with gross combined weight of 22,320.

Two settings in 2016 Ford F350

Thanks Everyone
Ever since I began towing my fifth wheel with my new truck I have complained that the braking was soft and didn't brake firmly enough for my taste. I have the gain all the way to 10. My DIC is listed as Low, Medium, High. Mine was set to Low. Changed it to Medium. Will see how it brakes next time we go out. Good info here. Maybe I should have read the owners manual better. I missed this little tidbit.
Happy Towing

Well, I hooked up to the Silverback this morning and pulled it out of the barn. CW, with the DIC set on high, it would lock up the brakes at rolling speed in the driveway with the controller at 7.5 or higher. I ended up at 7.0. I'll check it at highway speeds tomorrow.

Thanks again. This was a big deal for me, because I was preparing to start pulling hubs to inspect/adjust brakes.

Wow, what a great thread. I'm on my second Ford F-350 and have complained to my dealer about the poor braking with my 5th wheel attached. Wait till I show them about setting the DIC. Thanks for the great information.

My 3500HD allows you to set trailer brake bias by entering number 0-10 directly via the DIC. It can also be set using a manual slide switch on the ITBC.
The towing guide tells you how to find the correct setting (basically, while moving at slow speed (I think it is about 20mph), you move the manual slide switch until the trailer wheels lock, then back off slightly).
The guide also states that when towing a very heavy load, even max bias may not lock the trailer wheels.
Dually is not provided with sway control (I guess they figure its not needed with DRW).
Remember - trailer brake bias is road condition specific. Any time road conditions change, bias needs to be changed.

I like to set my brake controller up on dirt roads. Increase the level until the wheels lock and then you are good on pavement. Anyone else do this?

Yes, I was wondering of the setting on your last 5er. The weight you had listed for it was similar. The Montana is about 40% higher. Thanks

On my Crusader I set the DIC to "Medium" and bias to 8 and would lock the tires. When i got the heaver 5er I switched to "High" in the DIC and would lockup between 7 and 8 but won't lockup with the DIC set at "Medium" even with a bias of 10.

Thank you!!! Our Cougar is just a little lighter than your Crusader and I set it at Medium 7.5 so that helps my comfort zone. I have adjusted to where it felt best but have not locked the brakes and hope I never have to. Towing 20K miles annually that day will probably come though. Thanks again.

Anyone know if a 2015 F150 Lariat has these controls?

You know it worries me to know that so any people are towing with Super Duties that don't know how to set them up. I am not trying to put anyone down we all need help sometimes myself included. Its just that, how many others, who are driving the millions of Super Duties that are out there, who are not reading this thread are driving without proper braking settings!

I have worked for dealers, there is little to no way of knowing all the vehicle settings for every vehicle they sell. Yes, you can find the the answers to most any question customers have. But only after you read their owners manual for them. They don't have the time to do this for every customer and many would not do it if they had the time.
It was super annoying working in Mercedes Benz/ BMW service center because no one would read their manuals. These cars can do zillions of things most owners are clueless about.

Anyway glad the word is getting out there about this. And a big thanks to those who spend their time helping others on this forum.
